Would seem like the intention is to compete with Amazon and Google's mid-level voice assistants, but Siri is still pretty far behind those two and would need dramatic improvements before a low-cost Siri speaker becomes a viable thing.

My HomePod is ace because of the sound quality; Siri understands maybe 70% of my requests, and even those it understands then return an incorrect result and I have to override manually anyway (playing the wrong version of an album or song for instance).

I don't know why I'd want a second-rate speaker driven by a second-rate voice assistant.

I've noticed recently Siri seems to be getting more music requests wrong on the first attempt, but actually seems much more reliable with HomeKit requests and general asks about the news, weather, setting timers etc.

Hopefully pairing for stereo sound is onboard from day1.

(Maybe even coupling 3 together with 2 normal HomePods for surround sound? Or more for atmos??)

No interest in homepod. Bc hey siri exists and google home is the best.

sound was the only selling point. Now this just dilutes the sound.

looks nice tho.

siri is still the worst

For me the HomePod has too much base. I guess the Mini will be better for me? Or if they could just let us choose the eq...

From my experience, I think the bass is perfect. And it really depends maybe on your room side that you’re using the HomePod in. (Remember, the HomePod uses its built-in microphones to listen to the sound it’s exhibiting and then adjust how its array of seven internal speakers). So if you’re using the HomePod in the smaller room, maybe the bass appears a bit more pronounced, especially if it’s in close proximity to a wall. I suspect if you moved your HomePod into a larger room with higher ceilings, you’d notice a difference with the bass appearing to be more muted.

To be fair, as much of the problem is to do with Apple Music's tagging and metadata as it is Siri itself. also the fact that whether it chooses the "clean" version of an album or not seems to happen at random, which makes lots of hip hop a quite irritating listen when it censors out every instance of the n-word.

Someone make a rechargeable (1 month battery) waterproof speaker with their assistant built in, for the shower, already

and you are failing if you’re not putting a clock on your device in 2020

come on google, come on apple

I hated the bass on mine at first, almost returned it. I use it in my relatively small office room and it's on my desk, so I can feel all the vibrations from the bass.

I've got used to it now, but I do have to agree that an EQ, or even a "reduce bass" option somewhere in the settings would be really welcome. If I'm working late at night I resort to headphones because I'm too worried about the thudding bass annoying the neighbours, which is a bit ridiculous.

The rechargeable part of your post I agree with, especially for portability it would make it more convenient (Which I believe this will happen at some point). However, I don’t think Apple intends to make the HomePod ‘waterproof‘, mainly because that would require so many different design elements with adhesives and sealing. I generally think the HomePod is primarily about the sound quality in an office or home versus bringing near a pool or to the beach.

I had to buy a Echo during lockdown so I could have a small speaker for my Mack Pro in home office. If HomePod had a mini jack input I bought have bought one instead. I don't like the sound quality from the Echo but it has a mini jack input so is far more versatile...

Apple needs a screen home assistant if it wants to compete with amazon and google.
I don’t care about audio I have dedicated systems in every room for real sound. I care for use And how well things are with HomeKit support.

Why even go either if all you want it for is your macpro? Get a better speaker with 3.5 out and use Siri on your computer it’s connected to.

You’re welcome

and it's even compliant with Apple's dongle policy/philosophy LOL

I think they got it right with the homepod it sounds great and they cant lower the price much more so need a cheaper version to get more people into apple music/siri. Its pretty much going to be a quality amazon echo
How could someone not buy it? It’s Apple for $99 and u know the sound is going to be far superior to anything else. I’m in for at least 2.

And another story about the 15W magsafe charger?
Why not all the info in one big Article ?!
[automerge]1602232820[/automerge]

it can;t deliver amazing sound based on those dimensions...physics ...i think this is for small rooms, apartments etc
How do u know? Do u work for Apple? My thinking is this might be a big hit

Will be interesting to see if this smaller HomePod can still handle being a HomeKit hub. As long as it can take voice requests and send them to a full sized HomePod at the other end of the house, we will probably get one for our bedroom. If stereo output for Apple Play 2 works maybe even 2.

Looking forward to buying some of these if this is true. I already have have four HomePods and love the sound quality paired in stereo as well as the ability to control lights around our home).

If the $99 price point is true these would be great to add around in rooms where stereo sound isn’t really needed. Although, I do wonder what they would sound if paired in stereo compared to the full sized Homepods.
