Would be great to see it across the board, it makes AR so much quicker at relocating within a world map, and more stable while in use.

To be honest I haven't noticed that much of a speedup from Lidar in focusing times and video focus is sometimes still missed.
What AR apps do you use? I've found AR to be a big let down. Would be happy to find some useful AR apps.

Never used it don’t know why we even have it
I have a feeling Apple has a plan for AR, and the idea is to flood the market with devices better AR support like Lidar so creators can easily contribute to the platform. But yeah, on the consumer end, so far the useful usage is just night mode portrait.

It honestly makes no real difference. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and I took a stack of photos with my sisters regular 12. In the dark, in sunlight, different objects and distances and whatever else. The photos had literally no difference. They exposed just as quickly.
the only difference ? I can use the ruler to get a somewhat inaccurate measurement, when I tested measuring my floor to ceiling the result varies between 3cm to over 10cm in 1 foot increments across the room. Yay Lidar. I really don’t know it’s use for normal people.

I wonder what the percentage of iPhone users who use this technology is? Personally the total use case for the VR/AR stuff on my phone has been to have some pictures of dinosaurs walking around my room once or twice and showing that to a friend. That is all I've ever done with it. Though I do use the measuring tool from time to time and I guess that is AR and maybe it would benefit from LiDAR if I had a pro. But I have a 12 mini and I'm not trading size advantage for LiDAR.

Apple ditch the LIDAR and please put in a NIR spectrometer lense in its place.
I believe one of your suppliers has a $5 one the size of a camera lense.
Why? Imagine your iPhone being able to quickly scan objects, and using AI models, predict the content of what you scanned. Need to check your meds? Scan a pill and it'll tell you if it is fake, generic or original and how close to its best before date it is. Brewing beer? Scan your hops and instantly get the current alpha and betas (which degrade over time). Yes, it can scan other herbs and medicines and is already being used in the area some of you may presume. ;)
I could go on and on, the list of applications is huge and expanding rapidly.
It would be the most empowering tool to ever have been added to a smart phone.

I’m hoping that all iPhone models get LiDAR sooner rather than later. The more devices that have it the more likely it is that devs will support it. Hopefully Apple can also up the resolution of LiDAR in the future.

ARKit is supported from A9 upwards. Lidar is not a real excuse for developers. It just gives faster/better space detection, but it is not required.

I’ve found no use for AR and LiDAR. The phone might be using it and I might be unaware, but consciously, I don’t use either.

Why would developers create an app that can only be used by 10% of its customer base?

That's a flawed line of reasoning.

The customer base for specialized apps is often much different from the overall iPhone customer base. Imagine a power-user app for photography, video, photogrammetry, or 3D scanning. For such an app, the proportion of "Pro" users will be much higher than for your average non-specialty app, as are users who own one of the latest models.

For less specialized apps, it only applies on a feature level, not the app overall. Developers may well add features that give extra benefits to 10% of their total customer base. Think of it like adding dual-monitor support to a graphics card. Only few need it, but they do, and that is why it is supported so often.
