I’d be happy if in the next MacOS the WindowServer process didn’t constantly take about 70% of my CPU so my fans are always running. Thanks.

A UI redesign for Mac OS. Suddenly I’m interested and a bit afraid.

Well, there are two sorts of re-design:

Type A
Software designer: OK, I've identified some issues with the current UI that users have been complaining about for years and come up with some brilliant ideas for improvement and tested out a mock-up on a mixture of regular mac users and novices.

Boss person: Great, let's do it.

Type B
Boss Person: Magic 8-ball says that we need to re-design our UI to stay current and relevant!

Software designer: OK, I'll drop what I'm doing on these urgent bug fixes and form a consultancy group with a graphic designer, a celebrity DJ and the former director of Fischer-Price and we'll start by deciding on a good name for our fictitious target user so we can start inventing their biography.

Boss person: Great, but remember that, three years ago, someone tweeted that the term "mouse" suggested animal exploitation and the last board meeting decided that "trackpad" had unfortunate connotations for user privacy, so getting rid of those should be a priority.

Let's see which sort we get.

In my dream, new ATVs/tvOS will support 2+ audio streams, and Apple understands that desktop & mobile OSs should feel and work differently.

In my dreams, I see a battle royale cage match of leakers and analysts. The “rumor consumers” are arguing and pontificating while trying to figure out who is right amongst themselves. Apple leadership is sitting ringside in their special box laughing as they fan themselves with money.

I mean really, I don’t remember a Sunday being so busy with rumors.
“I have the scoop on WWDC, well maybe not!”
“In my dream... no, it really was me dreaming!”

Apple is going to find these internal sources one way or another.

Exactly. Change should be limited to something that’s broken or into something completely innovative *BUT* that’s universally lauded as “better” than before....changes that somehow nobody envisioned over the past decade of annual enhancements.

But change just because the marketing department and some loud fans believe that ”new” equals “better” that results in noticeably worse ways of doing things (generally, the more flat-design and buried-offscreen-behind-hamburger-icons interface design goes, the worse it’s been IMHO) frightens the hell out of me. Plus, just because many of us now “know how to do things” on touch-driven or mouse-driven screens does not mean that certain UIx affordances (such as buttons that look like buttons or dark black font that’s easier to read than trendy light grey font) aren’t still super, super valuable for intuitive and efficient function. And no matter how “cool” the idea may be to some to see a universal/singular design theme, a mouse/keyboard-driven environment need not look as close as possible to a touch-screen environment. Guess what, I’ll never wish my bathroom looked and was laid out exactly like my kitchen.

Too much of Apple’s recent interface reinventions seem to be the equivalent of the rockstar who rises from underdog into a famous, beloved celebrity only to get bored of success and then start dabbling in way too much unnecessary experimentation just to recapture the buzz that got them to the top. Or, who can’t accept keeping some things “as is,” where the victory is the fact that things are aging so well, and instead starts dabbling in way too much unnecessary plastic surgery.

Very frightened at the prospect of a UI redo, especially exiting what I understand to be a crap of an OS (Catalina - I’m still on Sierra, having too much valuable $$ 32-bit software).

If the "Incoming call for iPhone is not forced full screen" prediction is true, that alone will make me update to iOS 14. Calls taking over the screen is the biggest pain in the a** especially now that I work from home and getting office calls on my iPhone.

Improved handwriting? Great! Now isn’t it finally time for Apple Pencil support on the iPhone?

Breaking news: According to my sources Apple will tonight unveil a new version of MacOS and iOS. Perhaps even tvOS and WatchOS! It could be version 10.16 or 14 or 7. We don’t know for sure but according to my sources Apple will (perhaps purposely!!) leak information tonight around 7PM CET!

Boy I hope so. I can barely understand how to work my iPhone and Mac. So many horrible broken design elements that need baby-with-the-bathwater thrown out into a complete renewal.

🤢

Haven’t Microsoft’s cycles of “Now see THIS” operating systems taught us anything?

Sad to see MacRumors get trolled so bad
They reported on a rumor, and they reported it as a rumor, not as fact. Many rumors turn out to be untrue. It’s in their nature. And the site is called MacRumors, after all. It’s not like you weren’t warned.

What the hell is Big Sur? What a stupid name. Hope its fake.
Was typing three sentences complaining really that much easier than typing two words into google? Perhaps complaining was more important than understanding?

Big Sur is a lovely place. I have fond memories of visiting. I still favor “Avalon” for the new macOS (with the cleanup-pass implications), but if not that, Big Sur would be a good name.

That would require changes to the screen hardware that may be incompatible with other attributes of the screen.

Keeping expectations low for iOS 14/iPad OS 14 but a redesign, widgets, no full screen call (and please no full screen Siri) and more would be phenomenal
