Usually, I very much enjoy the rumor mill reporting, but I'm having issues with this one. This whole idea that the base model iPhone 18 is going to be a "downgrade" just seems so contrived and intentionally vague to me. A "downgrade" compared to what? The base 17? Or just in comparison to the Pro models? Or is it just a reference to a perceived narrowing gap between the base model and the even lower end "e" model? Or is it all leading up to a last second revelation that the "e" model is going to be rebranded as the new "base" model, with the incredibly unlikely scenario that Apple discontinues the next base model equivalent... right after the current version became the most popular model Apple has ever released?

It all just makes me feel like there has to be an important angle on this story that has been missed entirely, and we're all just grappling with rumor reporting that will eventually end up being revealed as far less reliable than what we've come to expect, of late.

Makes total sense.

iPhone 18
iPhone Air 2
iPhone 18 Pro
iPhone 18 Pro Max
iPhone Ultra

That is way too many iPhones to announce at one keynote.

The fall will become the keynote for the expensive models. (Pro, Pro Max, Ultra.)

The spring will have a new keynote for the rest. (Standard, Air, E.)

In due time the Air will replace the standard model. ($900 starting price, more features.)

I was recently helping my boss pick out a new phone and when I did a compare, the 17 and 17 pro are VERY close in terms of specs relevant to most people. I'm surprised Apple gave it this much for a non pro phone. Definitely makes upgrading the next version a little more challenging

90% of people only need the e. Everything else is just people getting manipulated by marketing and fear of missing out. Nobody needs the pro another than if you take photos every day or use it as a real camera for your job but that’s unlikely.
Totally agree. I barely use the camera.

I was going to write that I don't understand what exactly this downgrade means, but I'm glad that I'm not alone 🙂

This isn't a "leak", it's just logical deduction.

The obvious reason to shift the release date is that many people buy phones on 24 month plans via network carriers, and now people whose contract is ending in October / November will have to choose a Pro, rather than a base phone, if they want to get a new 24 month plan immediately after their current plane ends.

Makes sense strategically. I wouldn't call it a delay though. Samsung has done the two big releases a year thing for awhile now, doing the Galaxy S line in Jan/Feb and the Galazy Z line in Jun/Jul. No need to go really hard in one month and then have nothing to announce for a year.

People who buy the base iPhone will buy it at any time of year when they need a new phone. They do not know when WWDC is, what the release schedule looks like, or even the MSRP of the device. They just get a phone when they want/need a new phone and get whatever the carrier store rep or Apple salesperson recommends. In fact, by releasing it in the Spring, it will have 27.3 or .4 on it by then, and will be a much better out-of-the-box experience than the early adopters will get with the 18 Pro and 27.0 this fall.
That’s what we did. We just got a couple of 17. Not only is there a couple of versions of software out now and real world reviews but there’s also more cases available too. I was seeing at around release people waiting for some cases from some brands.

I know other articles I’ve read have said the processor and the screen are being downgraded from the 17. I think it’s not going to be as bright it said and there might be a couple of other things going on with the screen.
So the 18 and 18e will have the same screen and processor now. Not sure about the camera.
All in all it’s why even bother making the 18. You don’t make a new flagship that’s worse than the one from the year before. It would be better to just keep making the current model.

The “leakers” are really in overdrive all of a sudden and MR should be taking a more skeptical approach here—the idea that Apple would stagger iPhone releases, with the base model coming in the spring, has been percolating for years. These “leakers” are just shoehorning it into the “cost savings” and (BS) “downgrade” narrative to drive outrage and clicks.

These stories are missing the point. Apple realized it was not ideal for ever-increasing profits to have a yearly "super release" cycle. It also hampered PR. Now Apple can use the "ALL NEW" marketing year round and show ever-increasing profits.

I sort of feel like they could skip the base model this cycle; keep 17 around for another year and change. Have the line-up be: iPhone 18 Pro (and Pro Max), iPhone 17, iPhone 18e; then iPhone 19 Pro in Fall 2027 and iPhone 19 and 19e in Spring 2028.

If the parts are showing as being similar or the same between the supposed 18 and the 18e, then it may be that Apple is already going down this route. Considering how long they already keep the older non-Pro models around for, they could do this super easily and ride out the component shortages that are already impacting the iPhone 18 to begin with.

It's not clear what they mean downgrade. Compared to what?

If it's compared to the 17 that's not good.

But if they mean compared to their original plans, that might not be such a big deal.

Weird rumor either way, and I have a feeling we'll be hearing too much about it until the time comes to find out.

Perfect opportunity to move to a 2 year or even 3 year cycle. Software already can't keep up with hardware and hardware shoulnd't need to be the best of the best so it can run poorly written software. the iPhone 17 would work just fine for 99% of the population when the 18 comes out.

This seems to be getting a bit messy, like Apple in the '90s. Why not just get rid of the "e" model and instead make iPhone 18 the budget iPhone? That would still leave us with 4 iPhones in the lineup: 18, Pro, ProMax, Ultra.

Apple proactively chose to delay the standard iPhone 18 as a deliberate market strategy, the leaker known as "Fixed Focus Digital" claims, with the move said to extend the iPhone 17's sales window while lowering production costs and improving Apple's competitive position against Android rivals.

In two new posts on Weibo, Fixed Focus Digital said that a downgrade to the iPhone 18 standard model was largely inevitable due to global supply chain shortages, and that Apple made the deliberate choice to delay the device rather than rush it to market.

By extending the iPhone 17's production cycle and launching a large-scale manufacturing ramp, Apple is said to be using the additional time to let the iPhone 17 consolidate market share at the mainstream price tier before its downgraded successor arrives. The leaker said Apple has targeted sufficient iPhone 17 supply to participate in China's Double 11 shopping event later this year. Double 11, also known as Singles' Day, is one of the world's largest annual retail sales events and a significant battleground for smartphone market share in China.

The leaker framed the approach as a "remarkably clever market adjustment mechanism," suggesting that shipping a lower-specced iPhone 18 will be easier to absorb commercially if it arrives some 18 months after the iPhone 17, by which point the previous generation will have already dominated the mainstream tier for an extended period. Fixed Focus Digital described the strategy as simultaneously lowering production costs and boosting market share against Android rivals.

The posts add a strategic dimension to what has become a series of downgrade rumors for the device. The leaker first reported that Apple is implementing certain manufacturing downgrades to the iPhone 18 as a cost-cutting measure, before adding that display specifications and the chip will both be affected. Apple could be planning to tweak the name of the A-series chip used in the device to obscure the extent of the chip change. Engineering Validation Testing of the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e is said to be taking place simultaneously in June, which aligns with the idea that the two devices now share significant engineering overlap.

Most recently, the leaker said certain parts are interchangeable between the iPhone 18 and the lower-cost iPhone 18e, indicating that some specification convergence between the two devices is real and measurable at the supply chain level. "Take it from me: The standard iPhone 18 model has been downgraded and its launch delayed-this decision is final and will not change," they added.

The iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 are all expected to launch in spring 2027, with the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable "iPhone Ultra" anticipated in the fall of 2026. A split launch strategy separating the Pro and standard models has been widely reported since last year, with Ming-Chi Kuo and Nikkei among those to have corroborated the plan.

Please stop giving the “downgrade” airtime. We’ve known for a while now that the base iPhone 18 won’t come out till Spring 2027, and Spring, thereafter and that strategy is wise and makes sense, going forward. The base 17 was designed for a 1.5 year cycle.

Apple will NOT downgrade the display of the base iPhone 18 from the 17. They will however, differentiate the Pros more, going forward, now that the base has 120hz and Always On. The LTPO+ displays will only come to the 18 Pros (and hopefully, Fold, since they are thinner).

So the 18e will likely get the Dynamic Island with the current size cutout and SHARE that with the 18. Apple will not, in any case, lower the 3000 nuts brightness of the iPhone 18. No smaller Dynamic Island for the 18 (and of course, 18e).

The iPhone 18 may also get an additional binned GPU core with the A20, like the 18e.

I just read that 2nm chip production will help with 3nm shortages, so I don’t think Apple will keep an A19 or even A19 Pro for the iPhone 18 and 18e. They will likely save the binned A19 Pros for the the MacBook Neo refresh.
