There's one thing I find weird though.

With the high number of leaks recently which come mainly from Asian sources, the leaked parts would likely be production units and not prototypes from Cupertino right?

Then they would require to have the regulatory FCC stuff written somewhere.

iPhone 4/4S:
Image
It has "Assembled in China", FCC ID and FCC/CE logos which are all legally required on all production units AFAIK.

Now if you look at the most recent leak, which you would guess is a production unit given the timing and all related internal parts that are brand new and not assembled.

Now where are the regulatory writings on that one? Would Apple produce an illegal phone? I don't think so.

They are probably parts from before mass production. They have to test the parts beforehand y'know...Once they test it and it's up to their standards (and they like the design), they finish up the device, gain approval, and mass produce the parts with the regulatory stuff on it.

Really? Edge was awful. I had the original iPhone, and I was thrilled to switch to the 3G. Also, we got the App Store alongside the 3G... Granted that was a software upgrade.

I still remember hating when I traveled back and forth from College because I had 3G at home and 3G at school, but not while I was driving. If I wanted a song on the road, it took FOREVER to download it.

Let's not foget the price point. That was huge for most people. The buy in on the first gen was $500 at it's cheapest, I believe. The buy in on the 3G was $199. The kicked is, unless you were unlocking the first gen, you still had to sign a 2 year contract with AT&T.

While these weren't design changes, per se, it was the start of a revolution. It was the start of making the iPhone affordable for "everyone". It was the start of what allows Apple to sell tens of millions of handsets a year.

All these leaks aren't the actual iPhone taken. They are just all renders of what we have heard and they had are the most accurate assumptions from the parts we've seen etc.

And for the naysayers, most of these leaks help only one group of people...the site that leaks it. Don't think it's not in their best interest to push stories that drive page views.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels these "leaks" are simply fakes in order to generate publicity / page views for their website :)

Of course they use them to generate publicity for their website. And if they are lucky enough to be right or at least close to being right, they become a "credible" source next year, and get even more views.

Now there is TWO men clapping... LOL

You're right, as far as getting the iPhone to where it is today. The 3G was a big part of that. The 3G enabled the average (non-techy) consumer to purchase the device. However, the 3G itself was an extremely minor upgrade (and aesthetically many say it was a major downgrade) to the original iphone.

I still think it will be different from these leaks. Last year, there were so many leaks on the 4S. I don't recall any one posting that the 4S would be exactly like the 4. But this is the fun of it - all the leaks and speculations. It's exciting to figure what Apple puts out. I'm just hoping it be a total redesign and what I mean by that is different like the 4/4S is different from the 3G/3GS.

Fingers crossed!

Don't even those have the FCC writings though? Even when they don't have final numbers they put some XXXXs.

I thought that only non-functional concept models made directly in Cupertino at an early development stage didn't have any regulatory writings at all.

Part of the reason they put those writings even before actual production starts is to have an idea of how they look in real life. It's hard to tell just from a render how it will actually look like since it depends on the actual color and material of the text. For example on the 3G it was gray on black, the 3GS and later had metallic text while the iPad has laser engraved text. You may want to know how the text will look like before ordering production of millions of units.

Of course Apple could have stopped writing them on pre-production units like they have always done in the past, but this looks suspicious.

Well the regulatory stuff is in the software already...

Settings > General > About > Regulatory

Includes the FCC stuff and stuff for other countries.

It's still required on the hardware itself, and like I said if they're going to produce millions of units, it may be a good idea to put some temporary FCC writings on the pre-production units just to get an idea of how it looks IRL, like they have always done in the past with pre-production units.

I think the most likely reason is that those are controlled leaks by Apple themselves. They are known for doing plenty of those and now is a good timing because there is a massive number of Android switchers right now. This is a good way of saying "wait, our new phone is right around the corner. You're going to get the LTE and larger screen you want!" This phone could have been made specifically for controlled leaks, hence why it's useless to put regulatory writings on it.

Anyway, enough with the conspiracy theories, we'll know soon enough on September 12th. :p

I consider this rumours to 100% real for the simple fact we haven't heard of any competing rumours.

Last year we had all the rumours of the tapered 'iPhone 5', while all the time part leaks suggested a 4S. This time we have part leaks suggesting a elongated design, which match up nicely with rumours coming out of the various websites.

I've seen nowhere where anyone is credibly suggesting that Apple is working on a completely different design.

You're one of the few that apparently use common sense! I think you reiterated my point quite well.:)

FCC information isn't required until its sold within the USA. So that's not saying much.

However to debate the data port if I were to make a fake iPhone it would not have Apples proprietary port. Something smaller, with tech specs I'd say it was USB or something else with MHL for HDMI output. Current technology so its believable and cool/useful...

However I would have dropped the hardware button with a software button...

But rumours are still just rumours. Remember all of the crazy rumours before the iPhone 4S? They were all wrong. Well, most of them anyway.

The difference between these rumors and the 4s rumors is we have actual parts now (that have obviously been professionally produced and coming from many different sources). As far as I can remember there were no actual parts, only renders and mock-up of a design that was on paper. There were also cases made from those "leaked" designs.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I for one love the new design and can't really see all the hate directed towards it. I know people want a wider and taller phone but I believe apple is making it taller for a specific reason which we will discover at the unveiling. I know people are saying it's the same as the 4/4s only taller but those that do are simply out of their mind. Put the two side by side and tell me they look the same, no rational person can. The ONLY thing that makes them look the same are the sides and I woulnd't use that as a qualifier of it "only being a stretched 4s". Front, back, top, bottom are all completely different.

You're welcome, Captain Bitchy!

He made a thread where other people can discuss like normal human beings and that you come here and make the first post THAT just makes me want to slap you. Discuss and make comments that actually has something to do with the thread.

OnT: It looks like something Apple could do, i don't think the black is something that would look good IRL. The white right now seems much better. :)

Lmao! You did not say CB! Thanks for my laugh for the night!

Im guessing you went to Missouri State or somewhere where you had to drive across the state. I couldnt stand making the drive bc signal was so sketchy.

LOOP says "Yep"

Looks like these leaks are becoming more and more legit.

The story on the MacRumors front page says his "yep" is about a September 12th Apple event.

I went to Mizzou. So I took I-70 to Hwy 40

Ah okay. Pretty big difference confirming date versus confirming design. Thanks for clarifying.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound like I was TELLING you that you were wrong. I meant it to be like, I thought the MacRumors Front Page said that. Thats what I get for using my phone.

I was really hoping that the leaks were not real, but the past two weeks has just been an explosion of evidence that they are in fact real.

I can still hope, but I won't be shocked at all if this is what we see on stage.

I too... am still hoping they are fake.

If these leaked pics turn out to be the actual phone that Apple will announce, then I will feel like Charlie Brown with a rock in his Halloween candy bag.

All in all, if the rumors are correct, I might actually skip this iteration. I've had all of them since the 3G, but I bought an unlocked 4s while I was overseas and not on a contract, so I think I'll spare my wallet this time and hold out for the next version. Still excited for iOS6 regardless. I'm not a developer so I haven't been able to play around with the beta. I think I might hold off and see if these iPad mini rumors hold true, as much as I hate to believe them, I might actually consider a smaller iPad.
