So I turned 21 less than a month ago, and I can drink now. The problem is that I hate the taste of beer. Seriously, I hate it. I can hardly stomach the beer I have tried (Corona, Coors, some others), it just taste terrible to me. I can drink the hard stuff, but I really wish I could just have a beer once in a while because hard liquor tends to hit me hard after a few.

So is it possible to 'learn' to like beer if I keep trying it despite the horrible taste? Are there any recommended kinds that don't have a similar taste to Corona or Coors, some that might actually taste good? I could drink Mikes Hard Lemonade all day, but thats $5 a bottle at bars, ugh.

First, Corona? Coors? Please.
Second, if you feel the need to like beer based on the price in bars then I suggest you save your pennies and buy what you like. Mikes Hard Lemonade is nothing but a wine cooler for a dude.

I don't see the need to learn to like an alcoholic beverage as there are so many to try. More importantly, at 21 I would not stress over what I don't like.

Have an iced cold beer on a hot day, you might like it then. :p

If you don't like it, don't drink it. I don't like hard liquor, but my friends drink whisky. I just buy my own beer. :)

I'll say that beer is an acquired taste and that you should continue to sample beers until you find one to your liking.

I first started drinking beer back in HS (oooohhh, underage drinking!!! oH nOeS!) and hated it. I really just drank it at parties but didn't enjoy it. As I got used to the taste and found which brands to avoid (Bud, Coors, Miller, basically most American beers), I started to enjoy it more.

Sierra Nevada, Boston Lager, Heineken and Blue Moon are some of the more common bears that I enjoy. I will say that for every beer that I've enjoyed, I've tried an equal amount of beers I had to fight to finish.

Don't give up! It is an acquired taste. If you keep trying, you'll begin to like it. I hated beer when I first tried it. I had a corona and thought it was AWFUL!

...but now I love beer and have gained many pounds because of it.

You might also want to try something like a Hefeweizen. Usually these beers have a sweeter taste and several have hints of fruits. Then go try some other beers.

I hate alcohol altogether. I'm only 20 and havent had that much but, it's a choice. I'd rather sit at home than be the only sober one at the party.

I so know where you are coming from. The parties I am going to get less and less entertaining the more the people around me get drunk, so I leave early while everybody else seems to have great fun.

I too am a beer taste 'hater'. I have run across one brand that seems to be pretty ok; problem is not that many bars have it. If you hit a market sometime soon or near a bar that stocks it try Leinenkugel. :D

I used to hate beer, after my first 4 years of college were completed it became acceptable though. I don't drink alcohol for the taste anyways.

To get used to beer I suggest a hot sitting. Sometimes when we were out at the lake we'd each drink 30 beers since it was so damn hot and we were there all day, out in the middle of the lake on a boat.

Maybe try a couple of different types of beer? They can be separated into 3 distinct categories, Ale: The stuff that floats to the top when brewing, usually a lighter softer taste. Lager: The stuff that sinks to the bottom when brewing, usually a darker beer, with a stronger taste, and Stout: The ooze they scrape off the bottom of the vat ;)

Then of course there are dozens (hundreds, even thousands) of different types within each category, I'd say try a little of each, I can't recommend any decent ale's, but I'd try a Sleeman's honey brown lager, and of course for Stout; try a Guiness (don't worry its not rotten, its supposed to be that color). :p

Oh and whatever you do, stay the frack away from Coors, Bud, corona, or any other big name beer brewed in North America (this goes for Canadian and Kokanee too though they do have a higher alcohol content.)

If he can't stand a light American (watered down) beer I doubt hes going to enjoy any of the others.

Not necessarily, from the first time I drank I really disliked Canadian, Kokanee etc (I'm from Canada) but conversely LOVED my first Guinness :D

There are loads of different beers out there, just sample lots and you might find one you like. It's like not liking apple juice and orange juice, and so giving up on all fruit juices (although not to those extremes, as obviously the different in taste between fruit juices is huge... but im rambling).

Have you tried cider? There are loads of types of cider out there too.

I don't like most beer, but I do enjoy a Corona with a lime with some tacos or chips and salsa/guacamole. I also tend to enjoy a margarita at the same time, though I suppose they're kind of girly.

I much prefer a good gin and tonic or gin/vodka martini to any kind of beer.

Don't learn to like it.

I'm trying to unlearn liking it right now and like you I just turned 21.

i personally hate the taste of beer as well, and i don't drink it. when i do drink, i can drink the "hard stuff" with the best of them. but i end up having to ask others what i did/said that night, and it's never good. so i try not to do that too much

Like someone else said, if you dont dig it--dont drink it. OR, you could be drinking the wrong beer. I fancy the Belgian Ale's (Duvel)....very smooth and drinkable. It and most other Euro Beers/Beirs make miller, coors and bud taste like carbonated crap-water. Rather gross and an insult to the taste buds. I dont drink to get trashed...I like the taste and am very peticular about what I'm drinking.

Im just going to go ahead and suggest the opposite of everyone else (this worked for me). Drink terrible beer, like the cheapest you can possible find. After that even okay beer tastes amazing.

That was pretty much my approach. :p

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a Margarita when the sun's out and you're sitting outside. You're in SoCal, so that's all the time. Win!
