I've just bought my first Macbook pro (Retina), I'm wanting to replace my custom built desktop. I'm moving away from gaming and trying to use the macbook for professional work.

I leave my computer on for about 16 hours a day plugged into the wall, and wondering if this would be bad for the macbook. Could I leave it on for the majority of the day (plugged in to the wall)?

Does this decrease the lifespan of the macbook?

I leave mine on all the time. I only turn it off when I had have to take it with me somewhere.

You shouldn't be worried about affecting battery performance.

You can leave it on 24/7 for months at a time with no problem. To keep your battery healthy, unplug from AC power and run on battery a few hours every few days. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery questions:
