Hello all,
It's been a long time since I've kept up with Apple, used to be a big nerd but then Nursing school came along and I've been distant ever since.

I currently have an iPhone 4s and I am ready to upgrade to the next iteration of the iPhone which should be announced on September 9th.

However, I have AT&T and managed to still have an *unlimited* data plan. I pay 100$ per month for my plan,

If I want to keep my unlimited data plan, I need to pay an unlocked price correct? Wouldn't this be over $1000 for the 6S+ assuming the 128GB is the max capacity?

Does it make financial sense to pay that much for the iPhone? Is my current plan obsolete? What is the most agreed upon/best option that's discussed here on the forum?

I use spotify premium on my iPhone and always have music playing. Pictures and video are important to me as well, which is why I want the most space possible, I'm done with the 16GIG situation.

I tried to get a usage report online from AT&T but their crappy website will not produce the drop down boxes. I have gotten warnings from AT&T stating my usage will be throttled,

I appreciate you reading this all and any input is appreciated.

If you are the type of person who keeps his/her phone for 3+ years, 128GB makes perfect sense IMO. Only you can decide if the throttled unlimited on AT&T is best for you. T-Mobile might give you a better deal.
4S to 6S+ will be a huge leap!

I think leaving AT&T makes me nervous, I travel decently throughout Massachusetts and want the best coverage.
If I get 128GB then I will without doubt, keep it for 3+ years.

Stick with AT&T, buy a 2 year contract 6S+ for $299. You can keep your unlimited data. But you have to order through AT&T.

Note, to keep your "unlimited" plan I was told at an AT&T store that you cannot renew/ continue your contact by getting the phone in an AT&T Store or at AT&T online. To get an new phone and continue with an "unlimited" plan that you would have to call and order your new phone by speaking to someone at AT&T customer service. He stated that this is due to the "unlimited" option not being listed in the systems they use in the store or as a dropdown option for AT&T online. Still trying to verify this is true.

Not true, att app on my phone shows me upgrade options and gives me option to check the unlimited option to retain it

Really, nice! Do you think it will work for preorders too? This will be my 1st phone ordered directly through AT&T. In the past (3Gs, 4s, 5s) I have ordered directly from Apple (which I prefer). It just goes to show that the AT&T Store employees do not always know what they need to know...

Just download myatt and look yourself. I'm sure if new iPhone was out it wouldn't be any different.

It's practically twice the size, just give it a good couple of weeks to get used to it!

First off look up your account on AT&T app or online store. Should show you your upfrade options. Third parties will not offer you contract phone, only can offer Next, even Apple. Be sure you are going to AT&T corporate store. The franchise AT&T stores will also not give you the $299 subsidy price. What are your monthly data usages?

As of earlier this year AT&T can no longer arbitrarily throttle people. FCC ruling, they can only selectively throttle if that particular cell tower is getting hit hard at particular times. People have been reporting they are no longer being throttled as they had befor. Even though they still got a warning text.

Best advise would be to price out your current plan, activation fee, cost of phone do this for totals year one, two three, and four. Then also do same for Next program. You can order Next through Apple. With Next you can spread out cost of total phone over 20, 24, or 30 months at which point you also own the phone. No interest is charged. Lay out spreadsheet and look at your totals for next four years then you can decide what is best.

Plus will feel huge at first, recommend a case makes it less slippery, I use Apple leather black held up real well for a year so far. After a week or two your 4s will feel tiny. The plus screen is gorgeous, stream some 4k content from you tube. It won't be actual 4k, but gosh it looks gorgeous.

Wow. thank you for all this! I will certainly get to making a spread sheet of my options. Another wrench has been thrown in with Apple's yearly upgrade plan.

Any other thoughts anyone?
