Hey guys,

Finally figured out why my left airpod is ALWAYS at 0% for no reason...it's sitting there connecting to my phone whenever it's close by!

I'd always notice my iPhone X audio not playing thru my car, I'd have to re-select the right output (car audio)...what was odd was "AirPods" is in that list most of the time so I figured it was normal. IT'S NOT! I found out my Left AirPod is connecting to my phone while sitting in its case when it's supposed to be charging! Has anyone seen this?

If I randomly check throughout the day, sure thing!...it's there in the list of audio devices.

Yeah, I've been having weird things like this. For me it seems to be tied to a particular app I use. When I start a video call with it, my sound goes to my airpods even when they are in their case.

Interesting. I'll pay more attention to that. I'm not sure what it is for me, seems to be when I try to connect to my car the airpods take over. Hmmm

Interesting. Thanks for posting that. I experienced the one AirPod running down to zero all the time in the past. I thought it was due to my AirPods touching my wallet in my pocket (I have a magnet on the wallet & it will hold onto the AirPods case if they touch. II speculated that it was pulling one of the AirPods away from the case enough that it wasn’t hitting the charging surface). The problem largely went away once I stopped carrying the AirPods to work. I mainly use them for running, and one was dead about 50% of them time when I would go for a run before work. So I figured I’d just leave them at home & only use them for running, which has worked pretty well. I’ve only had one dead once or twice since then. But maybe, it’s not due to the wallet, but just the fact that they aren’t close to the phone for the majority of the day. I”m going to have to keep an eye on this & see if I can replicate this.

I think after awhile, oil from your hair and face can get onto the pods, and prevent them from making a proper connection inside the case. My suggestion is to wipe the AirPod off with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol, paying particular attention to the bottom with the silver tip. Then moisten a Q-tip with alcohol and clean the inside of the case where the pods get inserted. I also blew the inside of the case out with compressed air, but you can simply let it sit to dry. After I did this, I no longer had any problems.

I experienced the same issue as well airpods not staying in charging mode even though they needed to take charge. I also was experiencing an issue where you open the case and the pop-up wasn't showing up on the phone. My warranty expires Dec 20; I took them into the Apple Store last Friday, and after testing, they replaced the case and airpods under warranty.

This is not it....I can see the L airpod "connected" in bluetooth settings. As soon as I disconnect in settings it will resume charging.

It has to do with connecting to the phone while in the case sitting stashed away. No idea why it will randomly connect though. I think something is triggering them to wake up in the case and connect if the phone is close (something triggering, i.e my car bluetooth connects to my phone and the airpods wake, sounds odd but this is what happens)

It seems to be the left one for me, too. And not always just based on the one app I’m using that seems to particularly want me to use AirPods. Sometimes I cannot for the life of me get my iPad to let go of the AirPods, unless I turn off Bluetooth. Yesterday, I put in my AirPods after charging for like a day, and of course my left one was dead. I had to turn off Bluetooth to let my left one charge.

I think maybe we have defective ones and need to go to an Apple Store.

Try this (if possible)

Leave your airpods out of range of any devices you have paired to them. Come back after a weekend or a couple days and see if the Left one is dead. I'm going to guess it won't be

Oh yeah, I’m sure that’s right. The problem seems to be it/them being activated by devices even while they are still in the case.
[doublepost=1512757191][/doublepost]But yeah, in my case it also gets triggered by starting a video conference with a particular app... Or at least at some point a few minutes in I can't hear my student anymore and realize the audio switched to my airpods in their case. It just happened AGAIN.

FWIW, I originally thought I had a defective AirPods. I took them back to the Apple store & they replaced the 'bad' AirPods, and then the other one started doing the drop to zero thing. I went back top there & they explained that you have to re-pair them with your phone after you get one replaced or they may do that (why they didn't tell me that the first time, I don't know). After re-pairing, it worked well for a while, but then started up again. I went up & they exchanged everything (both AirPods & the case), and I still have the issue. At that point, I figured there's no way it was bad hardware, so I haven't tried to replace them again. They were very accommodating though, so it might be worth trying to get a replacement pair, but in my case, that didn't solve the problem.

Got it, thanks!

After thinking about this some more, I wonder if leaving the case open would help alleviate the problem (at least when they were just sitting on my desk or something. As the AirPods have that sensor that tells when they are in your ears vs out, I wonder if closing the lid on the case allows the one that is glitchy to think that it is in-ear & if having it out in the open would cause it to think that it was not in-ear.

I know I'm resurrecting a 3 years old thread, but the same thing is happening to me quite often with a new pair of AirPods Pro :(
Me to I purchased AirPods Pro in 1st august 2020 and this proplem happened to me iOS 13.6.1 firmware 2D27 any solutions??

Yep Ive had the same issue but with the right one. Apple did replace it and it worked great for about a month then boom happening again. This really is unacceptable considering the cost. Im still within my first year but I have a really hard time believing new ones will be any different after reading this. Since everyone now makes wireless buds I'm probably gonna jump ship to a different brand. They are now everybit as good if not better for music, my main use. Plus many are far cheaper, makes me sad but I need my stuff to actully work like the supposed magic I'm not experiencing with the airpods, oh yeah I had the same issue but out of warrenty with the originals, sigh.
(I love Apple and have many of their products, just no more airpods for me, cant be trusted.)

For what it's worth, I've had these $30 wireless earbuds from Amazon for about 5 months now, and I use one or both every single day depending on what I do (when I'm walking, I use only one, so I can still hear ambient sounds, but I use both when I'm on my recumbent bike) and they have been flawless. You can charge the case wirelessly or wired, then the case charges the buds. They are super comfortable and stay in my ears. No issues with pairing, etc. I can't use AirPods or even Apple's wired earbuds because the shape of the pods doesn't work with the shape of my ears, and they constantly fall out. This was a great alternative for me.
