left Apple store frustrated ... there is no MBP for me?

I have to admit, apple products look better when they are shiny. haha

it's not that bad, colors look better on the glossy

I might be a bit dumb but I've hardly even noticed the glossy screen with my new MBP 13.

Only time I did was when I turned on a light directly behind my head.

The glossiness makes everything look sexier IMO.

Love my 13", way better for everyday use than the 15" I once bought and took back.

well at $999 (€790) like in the US i think i would take the plunge and get myself a new MBP13 and sell it for a new one when they finally come up with a decent frefresh. but here at €1149 ($1450) i really won't buy it in it's current state.

I would feel bad before shooting the youtube unboxing vid :D And knowing it would have to last roughly 4 years would make me feel worse about the glossy C2D.

In comparison the Acer Aspire 3935 with identical (2008) specs and the C2D p8600, 4gb DDR3, but even a resolution of 1366x768 is less then half of the MBP13, around €600 ... that difference is just too big, even if the MBP is of better build quality. The technical life of a laptop is longer then the economical value anyway so it would last just as long.

Get a matte screen protector for the MBP13? It's pretty much the same thing.

Also, you can resize the icons very easily.

Those things suck! You can see little sparkly bits of red, green, and blue. Once you learn how to spot these all you will see is pixels, not a coherent picture.

That sounds like me. FOr the past three releases of the macbook pros, I've been holding off because their laptops are never geared with the latest features and equipment.

I've made my decision though. I'm getting the next release.

Don't get so hung up on intel's naming scheme. the base c2d 13" is actually pretty beefy. Comparable to most i3 chips out right now. And I can only think of two notebooks with a i5 and a 13" form factor and they're both nutty expensive.

They didn't have a matte screen on a mbp though, only on a 30" imac. Would a matte MBP be comaprable to that one? I really really really (did i say really yet?) liked that screen. it was next to a glossy and I could see all the way to the end of the street on the glossy and on the matte i didn't even see the reflection of myself. so if it is the one on the MBP i would really like to get that one.

The 30 inch you were looking at was the ACD and not an iMac. That is why you liked the screen so much it, as the screen itself is worth $1799. Even the hi-res anti-glare on the 15' is not going to look as good as that screen.

i am not really hung up on the naming scheme and I know the i3 would have been worse then the C2D/320M combo. Although i can name more then 2 pc laptops using the i5 in a <= 13" form factor and are cheaper then the MBP13.

I am also sure it performs quite well for couch surfing and the like. I am sure the problem is just me. I really have an issue with spending €1150 for a 2008 laptop, even if it is running OSX.

I really want to get a MBP this time, as i said before i even already have the (legally purchased) apps lying around for it since november with the case and all. The MBP15 has the config i was expecting to purchase (minus the 7200rpm hdd ootb) but the formfactor is just too big.

I expect the laste 2010 MBP13 refresh to be really minor and just a C2D upgrade (again), so I would be waiting until mid 2011 at least i fear, which is too long since my asus eee seems to be dying on me and I can't get student discount at that time anymore....

I was worried about the reflection of the glossy as well, but I can honestly say that after having a 13 inch MBP for 2 months now it is really a non issue in a normal house setting. I've used it with daylight coming through the windows, lamps on, overhead light on, etc. and it was really a non issue.

It sounds like you're more worries about resolution than anything. If that's the case, go with the 15 inch.

However I really didn't like the extreme reflective glossy screen and the size of the icons on 1200x800.

The 15" next to it was the low res version but already a great improvement. I really can't affor the 17" so i didn't even try that highres model they had on display. It seems like a lot of aluminium to be using in bed, on vacation and on the sofa though.

You could always change the size of the icons and I would like to know where to get a 30" iMac :D

Shiny sells, but for me a laptop is not a toy, or impulse purchase. I love my 2010 15" MacBook Pro _because_ of it's matte, hi-res display.*

For a small & light grab & go laptop, I have a 13" Unibody MBP. However I've got to be honest, I get headaches from the super reflective display.*

I think those who've never had a MacBook Pro with a matte screen fail *to realize how bright they are. I do a lot of photography work & the hi-res is ideal. **

That said it really comes down to seeing one away from the artificial lighting in the Apple store. Had o known that, I would have passed & not bought the 13" MBP.*

yeah we established that it was probably an ACD i was checking out. it was awesome i must admit. i want my laptop to look like that.

i sooooo detest those shiny mirror screens even if they have a nicer bezel and are not inlaid so the corners don't collect dust.

even in a dim room i cannot stand for a second the reflective shiny glossy screens where i can see everything behind me ... let alone myself.

i could only get myself a matte MBP which would set me back big time in current offerings.

so just for the fun of it i went back to the applestore .... again. also to check for iphone/ipad release dates of course, but also to check the MBP's again ;-)

i happened to be the only one for 10 mins or so. Which gave me the opportunity to set all three MBP's up at once and on the same site with safari.

i did learn a lot today. i was once again confirmed that for me personally the A.G. is the only screen i could go for.

i also saw that the MBP13 really has very very very little screen real estate. it showed just a fraction more then my current eee. and the 1200x800 res is really too small for me, another reason the scrap the MBP13.

even the base 15 showed no where near what the MBP17 displayed. the HR 17" had the full cnn.com page in view, the MBP15 2/3's and the MBP13 just the header and the first article.

so despite the large form factor it seems i am stuck with the MBP15 HR AG because it is matte, it is core iX and it has better real estate.

they didnt have a HR AG MBP15 at hand though, so i couldnt compare it with the MBP17. how much of a difference would it make in real estate? larger then the base 15 but smaller then the 17?

now just convince my wallet that it is okay to step up to the MBP15 HR AG :D

I don't think the 15" base model you saw was a HR screen. The floor demo 15" models are generally the standard 1440X900.

no they didnt, it was the MBP13 1200x800, the base15 1440x900 and the 1920 MBP17 which was also AG. So i figured the MBP17 HR AG would be most representative for the screen i was looking for, the res is bigger but also the the sreen so i figured it'd be roughly the same as a HR AG MBP15. the MBP17 is *definitely* too big and WAY too expensive for me. a HR AG MBP15 is already stretching it coming from a plastic MB budget :)

well price is a factor as well. i got the go ahead from the mrs for a 1149 mbp. when i get the matte base 15 it is high res as well and more like double the amount in euros.

so it is either a sucky cpu with a mirror screen in a perfect size and price...

...or a week sleeping on the sofa with an excellent laptop and matte, albeit too large to use in my comfy chair.

tough one. still.

If money is the issue, you could look at :apple:'s refurb models, they're basically new, and a lot less expensive, so you could get what you want within the price range you are looking at.

The 15" HR screen is in between the 17" and the base 15".

If you plan on buying it in an Apple Store, I believe the only HR model they carry is the i7 HR AG model w/ 7200rpm hard drive ($2400 USD). If you want the i5 with the HR AG screen you're going to have to order online.

well i can get a small educational discount (was 19% but they decided not to order anymore so now it's just 8%) and i think i can't get refurbs with that discount. so a new MBP would be around the same price as a refurbed one, right? Nor can you get the "free" ipod with one. i was planning on buying it if i can front the money and selling it for around €100 as additional discount on the MBP.

i would have to order online anyway since we don't have a official applestore here with the edu discount.
