Please excuse poor use of this forum. I'm having great difficulty finding an answer to my challenge.

It appears that in the purchasing of my new phone, I was accidentally not placed within the iPhone Upgrade Program. I could have sworn I had it completed correctly.

I meant to be in the Upgrade Program. I guess my phone was instead bought with the "Apple Monthly Installments" instead. Long story short, now I'm under contract to pay for this phone over 24 months, paying for AppleCare+ separately, I won't get to upgrade after a year, and Apple Support has no idea how to handle this or seems to understand....

Has anyone else been in this situation? Probably not, but I thought to try...

Exactly as above. Return the device and buy it again. Simple. I did the same thing the first time.

Had the same thing happen to me due to a trade in. I just returned mine this past weekend and am now on IUP. Had to do the trade in separately.

As stated with others said, simply just return the phone, close out the loan and purchase a new one with to be on iUP. You may or may not get another hit depending on when it was done. Typically if it's less than a month, it still be a single hit, so you won't see it twice on your report.

It will technically still be possible to upgrade after a year if you trade in the phone and pay off any balance remaining on the loan.

Are you certain of this? Because iUP and Apple Payment Plan are not the same and looks like OP choose the Apple iPhone Payment instead of the Apple iPhone Upgrade program. With the Apple iPhone Payment plan, this does not let you upgrade yearly and you are essentially just financing a phone for 24 month without the option to upgrade.

I made the same mistake. Accidentally purchased via the “regular” monthly payment plan instead of the IUP. I had to place another order and returned the first one.

You can always trade in the phone and pay off the remaining balance of the loan. The difference is, the loan balance will not be forgiven under the Apple Payment Program. So you will still likely owe money at the end of the day. IUP forgives the balances.

Return
Rebuy under IUP
However you will not be able to use your trade in with IUP
The IUP price will be HIGHER than your monthly payment prices because they will NOT allow the trade in

Theoretically, the trade-in value for iPhone XS is $500 so a 64GB iPhone 11 Pro should also be worth $500 in a year — meaning it loses half of its value after 12 payments, which would cover the remaining balance. However, higher storage capacities don’t appear to be factored into the trade value at all.
