Just come across this issue when i tried to fire up L4D2 on my 2017 MBP with touch bar.

Hit launch button in Steam, screen goes black, spinning beach ball, nothing. Hit escape and get the error message in a box on screen:

Left4Dead requires texture compression but support was not detected.

Im directed to some Windows c centric support pages. Ive contacted Steam support which was particularly unhelpful (boiled down to "Dunno, as on our disc assign boards")

I noticed on the Steam discussion several people have had the same issue.

Anyone got any ideas?

I think the best way out is to start playing games on devices designed for this (PC, PS4 ..) Mac OS was created for productive work. Sorry.

That’s a ridiculous suggestion considering the game in question is a paid for and current game being sold via steam’s OSX platform to be played on a Mac.

I found the solution accidentally, Steam were very dismissive and no one offered any suggestions. I discovered my display resolution had be altered somehow. No idea how or why as I have no reason to adjust it. I set it back to default and all was good. And I didn’t have to buy a PC or PS4 ‍♂️
