I would avoid DivX's player. I got in on the free DivX Pro deal, and I have yet to actually find a .divx file that it CAN play, as opposed to VLC, where I have yet to find a .divx that it CAN'T play. So, stick with VLC and the Perian pack for Quicktime.
 
+1 for VLC player.

Plays ANYTHING. It is the holy grail of media players. I use it for everything.
 
Happy camper again!!!

After the latest Quicktime update 7.4 (92), I was not able to open .avi files in quicktime, it just stalled and had to force quit. The files could be opened only in VLC.

I just installed Perian and Quicktime is back in business playing .avi files...
