I thought iPhones always got the upgrades first followed by iPads? Since they only put 1gig into the iPhones I would expect the iPads to be equal in ram. JMO!

I've heard that argument as well.. iPhones get the new tech first then it gets to the iPad bla bla. I just figured with iPad sales down and maybe to keep up with the competition, Apple will gives us 2gb of ram??

I hope you're right of course. I don't mean to bring everyone down. Perhaps you're correct and Apple will up their game this year. Unlikely that I'll replace my Air this year since I need a new iPhone anyway. I'm still on a 4s sadly.

Dontcha think with people being up in arms about 1gb ram on the iPhone, Apple will have incentive to give us 2gb on the iPad?

Truth is, outside of the few of us on forums like this, iphone/ipad consumers don't even know what ram is. Apple could sell their devices with 1 gig of ram for the next 3 generations and sell just as many. 14 year old teeny boppers will get the iphone because their friends have one, not because it has X amount of ram.

No they couldn't sell just as many. They're already dropping in sales year-over-year in a huge way. Cut out the important specs and not only will they continue to lose the moms/grandmoms etc that they're already losing due to their moronically high pricing, but then they'll also start losing people like us who expect/demand better specs. I'm already prepared to switch to a tablet that can do multitasking if Apple doesnt provide it along with the necessary specs to make it run well.

How come?

Right. Apple listens to a couple of commentors on a forum, and makes its design decisions from there

Besides, even if they did (which they don't) do you really think they have time to change the specs of a product that is about to be released to the public in the millions? They are close to nailing down the specs for next year's iPad release!

Lower sales of iPad's has nothing to do with ram. It has to do with competition and with people keeping their older generation iPad's for longer periods of time. The iPhone 6 and 6 plus sold better than any previous iPhone and it only had one gig of ram. The vast majority of Apples customers only care about ease of use and brand recognition. The few of us who discuss this stuff could never buy an Apple product again and they'd never miss our money.

People have been up in arms from the cave man days.

Aplle does thing when it wants to. I am still waiting on a notification LED and more versatile audio notifications and it is not happening. Others want thinner bezels. Apple might listen but they also do it when they want.

This. The new iPhones have 1GB so I see no reason they the new iPads will be different.

The iPad Air will absolutely have 2GB of ram, because split screen multitasking will run two apps at the same time.

The iPad mini will get 2GB if Apple deems the 7.9 in screen size is suitable for the split screen multitasking feature.

If you look under under > Settings >*General*> About >*Diagnostics & usage
And if it says low memory then you have had lags or crashes due to low memory,
On my retina mini it's happen a few times...

I don't know if you made that but if you did great job. It's why I won't be getting a new iPad if it has 1GB of ram. Enough is enough Apple it's so ridiculous.

Yes, that is mine. I had an original video, but the apple apologists all claimed the sites I went to were TOO complex and not a real example.

This video clearly illustrates why I'll not buy another new apple mobile product with only 1 gig or RAM, and specifically how apple mobile products will ABSOLUTELY not adequately handle side by side multitasking, until they get 2gigs of ram. So anyone buying one now should realize that they will be left in the dust when true multitasking finally comes to iOS - no matter the claims apple will make, that the prior gen hardware will support it.

Never understood the fuss about ram in the iphone and iPads. I never have any issues with either of mine. What are you guys trying to do with them anyway?

Well my Air crashed several times sometimes even daily, and i got "low memory warnings" all the time. Apps were refereshing all the time. Finally i gave up and sold the toy on summer. Lucky i did before ios8... Not getting air2 if it is just a facelift...

Same. It's all FUD that gets spread around here on the forums. I have never had an iOS device lag on me (when using an OS version thats friendly for it, of course. Not like that iPhone 4 iOS 7.0.0 fiasco). Androids on the other hand....

A very popular use case for these things is to be on a forum and typing up a message or filling out a form then going to a different tab to research something or out to a different app. You can no longer reliably do this as safari will more often than not reload the tab losing anything you have entered.

I used to *love* using my ipad for forums but it can no longer function in this capacity. Personally I will not purchase another iPad until this is fixed and I feel like the Air is defective as is due to this issue.

I am reasonable. I don't expect all tabs to stay in memory but would it be too much to ask that 1-2 stay in memory at least? Even this doesn't work sometimes.

Im gonna try this on my ipad mini when I get home

Open up more than 3 web tabs at once without reloading. What are you doing with yours? 1 web page at a time? Coaster? Can see how 2gigs of ram might be overkill for that...

1GB RAM on a device is an inconvenience, sure. But you know what's even worse? 16GB storage on a "premium" tablet IN THE YEAR 2014!!! I love apple, but seriously, I'm done with 2010 era storage levels. NAND Flash doesn't even cost a third of what it did in 2010, Apple is simply keeping it at 16GB so that people feel the need to pay $100 more. Seriously, it is beginning to get infuriating of they go yet ANOTHER year at a ridiculous 16GB.

People have WAY more issues with a lack of free space than a lack of RAM. At least most android tablets let you stick in a micro SD card. It's inexcusable.

As a kind note, there are 6Gb LPDDR3 chips available in the market, from both SK Hynix and Samsung. So before hitting the step of 2GB, there is always a choice of 1.5GB. But in my opinion, as Apple just went the uniform-ish platform way for 1 year (same with iPhone 6/6+), it would likely not re-introduce between the Air and Mini any kind of differentiator other than the screen and device size.

LOL yes I use it as a 500 dollar coaster:rolleyes:

Here is what I do. imessage, Facebook, Google Docs, Google Drive, A couple of tabs in Chrome, Email, Youtube video watching, Watch baseball games via the MLB app. I have done all of those at the same time and not had any issues. Usually its 2 or 3 apps at the same time. Most of the time, it is used as a media consumption device (as it was designed to be).

Most people that complain about it are probably trying to use it as a computer replacement.

How many tabs do you have open at a time?

I guess the only question is, has the contrast improved?

Well, last year the iPad mini with Retina got the exact same CPU part that the iPhone 5s did and the iPad Air got a more powerful variant. I don't see why they'd deviate from that this year. So, yeah, 1GB of RAM is probably a safe bet. It likely won't be until the A9 that 2GB of RAM is standardized all across the board.

As for the contrast, they literally put in the best display they could at the time. My guess is that if there is a panel that fits those specifications, then it will be in the iPad mini this go around.

I think all new iPads will come with 2gb of ram.

Again, iPad mini, at best, uses the same CPU in that year's iPhone. The iPad's CPU, even last year, was different than the mini and was marginally more powerful. Given this, 2GB of RAM is possible in this year's Air and unlikely in this year's mini.

I thought iPhones always got the upgrades first followed by iPads? Since they only put 1gig into the iPhones I would expect the iPads to be equal in ram. JMO!

Again, the CPU in the iPad mini has never been identical to the CPU in that year's iPad. The CPU in the iPad mini HAS, at one point (this past year) been identical to the CPU in its contemporary iPhone.

I've heard that argument as well.. iPhones get the new tech first then it gets to the iPad bla bla. I just figured with iPad sales down and maybe to keep up with the competition, Apple will gives us 2gb of ram??

Given that Apple posted that video in the iPhone introduction basically saying that they don't care about being first anywhere near as much as they do about being best, I don't think they care that Samsung tablets have more RAM.

So the consensus here is that it will have 1gb of ram...

iPad mini, yes. Would bet the cost of one on it. iPad Air, on the other hand, doesn't have as many presidents that limit its likelihood.

The iPad Air will absolutely have 2GB of ram, because split screen multitasking will run two apps at the same time.

The iPad mini will get 2GB if Apple deems the 7.9 in screen size is suitable for the split screen multitasking feature.

2GB of RAM won't be a requirement of that feature. It stands to reason that if Apple is supporting two tablets with 512MB of RAM (first generation iPad mini and iPad 2) that a current iPad Air or fourth generation iPad should be able to run those apps at reduced speed comparable to those older tablets (which it deems able to run iOS 8).

As a kind note, there are 6Gb LPDDR3 chips available in the market, from both SK Hynix and Samsung. So before hitting the step of 2GB, there is always a choice of 1.5GB. The current Air has a slightly faster processor than the current mini. The CPUs between them have never been the same. They could VERY easily make that a differentiator.
