Because we don’t expect to get several years use out of that folded/re-folded/re-folded piece of paper.
We didn't expect to go to the moon in 1969, most people don't even understand what is going in in a modern internal combustion engine, and the internet was a nothing to people years ago. Things change and it starts somewhere.

That’s the engineering part. I’ve already outline the goal/vision for them to work toward. The end game is to have a huge paper-like digital device that can be written, drawn, saved and searched. It can be folded into a small piece that you can carry in your pocket. Compared to a laptop, it’s more suitable for drawing and much more portable. Compared to a phone, it has more space to work with. Compared to a tablet, it’s more portable. Compared to a classic paper, it’s searchable and can hold a lot more info. So there you have it.

Foldables are the 3D TV of the ‘20s — a gimmick. By their nature the folding screens are less durable.

We went to the moon in 1969 because people back then didn’t waste 4-6 hours every day playing with their digital pacifiers.

With movement comes wear and tear, it’s unavoidable. For something needing crystal clear light pass-through, I just don’t see bendable screens lasting years. Unless it‘s a large radius at the bend, which may be counter to wanting a compact overall shape. Of course, we shall see. Just don’t mix the desire for brute progress with blindness to key trade-offs, like Jony Ive/Apple is sometimes unfortunately too willing to do.

These companies that come out with folding screens, really need to give them to toddlers for their testing.

What I have seen toddlers due to devices in hardened cases, pales by comparison to some robot folding and unfolding a device in a controlled lab a million times. These will fail in the real world with real people using them.

It's surprising how soon as there is something different every armchair engineer, designer and inventor wakes up and becomes an expert critic

Thank goodness they are seldom listened too so things can move forward

I would love to be proven wrong. But in the case of durable, long lasting folding screens, I have yet to see a flat, static (non-folding) screen last a long time unscathed. Start adding bending, fatigue, and manhandling, and good luck keeping it clean and scratch/mark-free for a longish time.

This is really a waste of time like phablet, AMOLED, folding phones, wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, multiple cameras, and giant batteries.

ok thats cool.. other than it can fold, what does this solve?

Thats what I was going to ask. I just can't imagine what the use for it would be? The only thing I can think of, if you will allow me to generalise for a minute, is that while most guy's work/office/travel bag's would easily accomodate a non folding laptop, the women I know at least tend to prefer much smaller bags. Perhaps they are going after the female demographic.

(Before anyone complains, I am not trying to say all women are the same, or all men are the same, I am just looking at it from a commercial demographics/targeting perspective)
