Every person I have ever talked to in real life acknowledges Mac Os as more pleasant.
No viruses, no firewalls, intuitive, stable, safe.

You mean no visible anti-virus and no nag screen to enable the firewall, right? Because there have been Trojans for OS X, and there's even a built in firewall.

I've used ThinkPad's at work for the last 15 years. My current work supplied ThinkPad is the T420s which has no trouble at all handling all the demanding work I throw at it and driving two external screens. I've had a play with the new T440s models and they are excellent.

OS X is not relevant for my line of work, so I save my Apple stuff for personal use.

I disagree. Are you seriously ok with using windows or linux ?

Why wouldn't he be? What's wrong with Linux or Windows?

I heard that lenovo's W540, which was supposed to be the best of their best workstation laptop, is getting pretty awful reviews.

Apparently lenovo's really going downhill...

83%. Decent.

I personally opt for the T series for work. W series are literally mobile workstations, so not something I'd want to carry around every single day.

Product reviews do not have to agree with user reviews, especially when it comes to usability over a period.

Anecdotally (from friends and their experiences), I also have found that recent Lenovo computers have had some issues or the other and their customer service is pretty terrible ( I'm sure this is a Consumer line vs Business line distinction again ).

Combined with their design decisions, pricing and negative reviews, I passed up on Lenovos in the recent research I did.

Terrible service? Every ThinkPad I've been issued has a 3 year Next Business Day support contract. In 15 years I've had about 3 calls and all dealt with swiftly the next day (the engineer attends your location).

Every single series of computer will have issues of some kind so we can all pull anecdotal evidence from somewhere when it suits.

Just to be clear, I am talking about Lenovo's business ThinkPad's. Not consumer crap.

trojans ≠ viruses
If you have the :apple: security setting enabled you are not gonna get trojans.
All routers have built-in firewalls in 2014.
I am not sure what the built-in one in OSX does, but I just realized mine has been off.
Firewalls and antivirus software slow your system down under windows.

That is something I addressed in my comment.

Also, a lot the goodwill that IBM had built seems to be eroding over the past few months. So all the quality machines people here are referring to, 15+ year old experiences don't directly apply to what's coming to the market today.

Most of today's user reviews of Lenovo laptops are not as good as they used to be, in my limited research of Lenovo products.

I'd argue that some people need to take off the rose tinted glasses. IBM ThinkPad's had a lot of issues that the Lenovo owned brand no longer experiences. Old IBM ThinkPad's used brittle plastics on areas such as the palm rests and hinges which often led to stress fractures. In the last 6 or 7 years ThinkPad's have moved on and are far better than they used to be.

Having owned a total of 0 IBM/Lenovo computers (but used a few), I'll take your word for it.

I do know however, as I mentioned earlier, while researching for a new laptop, when I looked into Lenovo, there was a lot of negative feedback with respect to the quality, customer service, features and price.

Just for the record, I'm not an Apple fanboy, the rMBP I currently have is probably one of the worse laptops in terms of quality control (nor am I fan of soldered on components). The two Dell Precision M4700s that I replaced early this year that were blanking the screen due to AMD M4000 were no better either. (As opposed to three Latitudes 2x E6510 and 1x E6410 which are rock solid till today, 4 years later).

You're right, anecdotes are everywhere. Look at the features, if you like it, buy it, make sure you leave yourself a sufficient safety net (warranty/return period) and enjoy your purchase.

Man, just look at lenovo's page. 2.7 stars out of 5. 69 reviews, most of them stating the how bad the newer revision got.

Most of lenovo's T line is also rated below 3 stars.

They are just not the company they used to be. Bad decisions everywhere, not even talking about customer service. It's a shame cause they were really the only ones making machines up to Apple standards. I really wanted a lenovo, but all the severely bad reviews steered me into buying a macbook pro. What can we do right? Gotta go with the flow.

Who's going to sign up to a website and give a good review? People sign up to vent.

Look at this forum, 100's of people complaining. Just how it goes.

That's why I don't really pay much attention to online reviews. The people who like it have little reason to sign up and give a great review. Plus, there are always idiots out there who have no idea what they're talking about. I saw a very emotional review trashing the Asus Zenbook (complete with every word in the review spelled wrong) because the reviewer couldn't find the Windows start button, as if it's the hardware's fault.

Although in general I agree with the bias of people with a bad experience (or a really good one) more likely to publish reviews, you cannot claim reviews are worthless.

Lenovo Thinkpad or 13 inch MacBook Pro.

1 year ago, my sister bought Lenovo 2-3 months after my MacBook Air 2012. In few months we compare side by side and the trackpad on Lenovo really showed its age. Our usage is similar. In the end, she used mouse instead. Also consider the charger which is bigger than MBA.
Just my 2 cents.

I can't answer for Lenovo, but I can say is that when I had a thinkpad that my work gave me to use - that puppy was a tank. It wasn't the heaviest laptop, nor was it the lightest but it was built to last. I commuted with that for years and it never had an issue. I'm not saying Thinkpads had no problems at all, but I am saying that in least my case, it was a great laptop.

Better then the Dells and Hps that I've had to use since then.

In my many years of using IBM/Lenovo I never had a hardware problem. Many Windows or other software issues but the hardware was rock solid. One thing about them I hated was the trackpad. I always disabled it and used the track point or a mouse.

To OP, you came to a great place for an un-biased opinion :p

If I could not run OSX I would buy a Lenovo - and put another way if I could run OSX on non-Apple HW I'd pick a Lenevo if I couldn't buy a Mac. A distant second would be Sony.

And as others stated read those reviews carefully. Lots of people complain about the OS not the laptop. And those wonderful Amazon reviews people giving 1 star to something because of shipping delays or poor packaging!

My only problem with buying laptops is that I have to see and touch them in stores before I buy them. Especially since this is my first premium laptop. If I had been able to feel the weight and test the performance of any of the lenovo models, I likely would have considered them.

I bought my Thinkpad X200 in 2010, and it never had problem with the hardwares. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB two years ago. It ran well.

I run Logos Bible Software, which is very slow on my X200. I felt that I couldn't stand it anymore, and was considering buying a Macbook. But finally I hesitated for one major reason: The MS Office for Mac does not support RTL languages such as Hebrew. And the format may mess up when a Windows user open it.
I could use Mellel for windows. But I really want to keep using Zotero, which works great with MS Office.

A few days ago I bought a SSD for the X200. It is very fast now. I'm quite satisfied with that. Now I'm searching for a cheap battery (the original battery lasts for only 1 hr). With a cheap battery that lasts for more then 3 hrs, I will not have complaint anymore.

My overall experience with thinkpad X200 is very good. I'd recommend it if your works require Windows apps.

Having said this, I'm still considering Macbook as my next laptop. I'm hoping the alleged coming MS Office by the end of this year would support RTL languages, and the format would be more compatible with the Windows version. And, I'm also hoping a new Macbook would come out by that time.

Ditto on the Thinkpads. We have several laying around at work that are quite slow but ill be damned, they still work perfectly and have held up very well. Not sure about the newer ones though. I'm talking models that are old like the T21 or T26!

My current rMBP is my first apple laptop. Well see how it goes.
