This is a shot of 10.3.9's help menu. It has all square corners.

I think people are talking about the actual corners of the menubar itself. I could be wrong, but it's the main change I see.

I agree!

I hope they replace the new folder icons. They are atrocious.

That I can totally agree with. But you know they won't lol.... You think they changed them for their health just to put them back to normal??? I don't think so. :( But I'm sure there will be an app that will put them back to normal!

Only one thing that I WANT changed, and that's to put the rounded corners back in the menubar. They've been there since 1984 and it would be really sad to lose them now.

The transparency and the square corners of the menubar are very meaningful, because Leopard introduce Spaces.

By Spaces, desktop is spread out not only to side but also to above.
At the same time, rounded corners seem ends of the desktop.

While we're lamentling the loss of rounded menu bar corners, I want them to bring back the happy boot up Mac that died with 10.2.

Not quite. Spaces only organises windows - the desktop, the menu bar and the dock all stay put. Spaces is slightly different to most virtual desktop implementations in this respect, as those usually seem to have the entire workspace switch. I think Apple wanted something more straightforward - no "Where's that file gone, it was on my desktop?" and "Oh no, it was on the other desktop" questions.

It also explains why the desktop changes to the blue gradient background when you zoom out to see all the spaces. You don't have four different desktops, only one, so the desktop fades away leaving just your collections of windows.

Regarding the rounded menubar corners: the new Leopard style is better, both graphically and usability wise.

Ever since hot-corners have started to gain popularity (Expose, etc.), the rounded corners make no sense as they have you pointing to some black nether-region. It's not really the desktop, but it still sort of is... makes no sense. Making the menubar extend all the way to the corner so you truly *point* to the upper corner is much better.

Transparency seems to be user-preference. Just make it adjustable and everything will be all good there.

Agreed. How dumb would a menu bar with rouded corners be when it's transparent? You'd either have the original picture boming through the cirners of the screen (ugly) or cut off the desktop picture itself (doesn't look right). Simple as that.

Leopard is a little less rounded than Tiger in general. Get used to it.

Can't wait. I do hope that most of the bugs are worked out before the October release date.

Think back to when Steve Jobs returned to Apple and all that has happened since.

Mac clones: gone.
Icon garden: gone.
Beige boxes: gone.
Floppy disks: gone.
Multicolored logo: gone.
OS 9: gone.
Smiley faced Mac at startup: gone.
Windowshade: gone.
Customizable Apple menu: gone.
PPC: gone.
Single-button mouse: gone.

And every step of the way, people have dug in their heels and claimed that the essence of the Mac was gone and screamed that there was no way they could live without that. And yet, somehow the world kept turning and we all dealt with it. And somehow, the Mac just keeps getting better, despite Jobs' apparent disrepect for the past. Seriously, if the rounded menu bar disappeared with Leopard, would you be that bothered by it?

I like was Jobs said about that during hs interview with Walt Mossberg at D:-- (paraphrased) "That's the past and we don't want to live there." I love that.

My only gripe is that I hope this damn @#$%& annoying startup chime is on the kill list. I used to think it was cool back in the late 80s, but nowadays... meh.

More like a start up gong. I believe the noise is in the firmware of the Mac hardware. Many were hoping the gong would disappear with the intel switch, no luck.

Without a system disk connected, I still get the gong.

Since I obviously can't argue with an opinion, I'll state mine.

I love the new square cornered menubar. It actually fits the square corner of my display bezel. I've always found the rounded corner out of place, particularly with the squared bottom.

I prefer the opposite. I like the rounded corners, and I wish they'd round off the bezel of the screen like they used to. I bought the first Rev. of Aluminum PowerBooks, and they squared off the top bezel, whereas the TiBooks has a rounded top bezel. I thought that looked more refined and like they cared about EVERY detail...

I enjoy the rounded corners though, no particular reason why, just pleasing to the eye...

A much discussed topic... To not hear the 'gong', turn down your volume before restarting. DON'T MUTE, but merely turn it down all the way... That is an important difference to note... This will rid you of the 'gong'... People say that the noise is to notify you that all the system hardware tests have been passed... That probably won't go away...

O_O you consider this sound annoying?? It's one of many things that make Mac a Mac, if they take it out, there will be 1 less difference between Macs and dull PCs.

BTW, why are you so irritated with this sound? Do you hear it often?

At first I didn't like the transparent menubar, but I realise that Apple has made a big mistake with that grass wallpaper. The menubar looks like crap if you ask me on that wallpaper, but after seeing it in front of some other wallpapers, i actually like it very much. :)
