Leopard Mail data detectors - old hat?

I've been making good use of Mail's new data detectors to add iCal events & Address Book entries. Talking with some of my PC-using friends about how nice the feature is, they've replied:

I think that Outlook has done that for a long time if you go to the trouble to enable it.

Outlook has done that for years. Sorry.

Yeah, even us cavemen with our rocks and PC's can do this.

I don't know a lot about Outlook, but are they talking about the same feature here?

It was actually part of OS9, IIRC..but it disappeared for a bit.

Yes, "smart tags" have existed since either Office XP or 2003. Having written one myself, I hate the bloody things 😛
