As the topic says, whenever I unmount something it remains on the desktop and sidebar, yet isn't actually there if I try to double click on them. So...it unmounts them, but still says they're there. And the remain so until I restart I assume.

CDs/DVDs/DMGs and all. Any ideas what's happening?

EDIT: Probably should add, when I go to unmount them the first time, I get "An unexpected error occurred (error code -36)

Obviously, the first thing to try is repairing permissions, but that seldom fixes anything in my experience. -36 is an I/O error, IIRC. I've seen it in relation to a flaky optical drive.

HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
or
HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
might be corrupt.
Move one at a time to Desktop
Restart (makes new default plist in Preferences)
Test it
Try the other one
No joy? you can put them back if you don't want to reset any preferences you had changed.

Next:
Log in under a different user account
Test it.

Tried com.apple.desktop.plist with no luck so far, I'll try com.apple.finder.plist next.

Well, (verifying permissions) seems to find problems but doesn't fix them. Maybe that's it?

... I assume it's not actually repairing them.

Are you running Disk Utility from your hard drive? That won't repair the permissions on said hard drive. You have to boot from another volume, such as your installation disc, which contains a copy of Disk Utility.

That is totally false. [You are (perhaps) thinking of "disk" repair... permissions are a different issue.]

We can ignore almost everything in that list (as they are the result of an unfortunate situation which i won't get into now).

I did leave one item in that list... because that does look like a real error (though i don't claim it relates to your initial post #1 issue, since error -36 is usually caused by I/O bummers).

The file /private/etc/resolv.conf should indeed be a symbolic link (not a regular file as indicated). We can investigate that by simply listing the file with Terminal.app:

ls -l /private/etc/resolv.conf

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 20 Apr 17 18:17 /private/etc/resolv.conf -> /var/run/resolv.conf

If you do indeed get a dash (-) instead of the letter l (as shown in red there), then that is another problem (potentially serious) which should be corrected.

Run that blue command, and post your result.

Did that, no difference.

Interesting. Well, did as you said and the result is thus:

Code:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 23 23 Jun 19:02 /private/etc/resolv.conf

Strange. Leopard was never set up with a regular file there... and it smacks of DNS poisoning to me. However, 10.6 has made some changes, and i'm not yet up to speed.

I think it's probably wise to replace that file with the symlink which normally resides there. But —at the very least —you (or we) should *look at* the output from these 2 commands and verify that none of the nameservers listed there point to some Russian mob's website:

vis /private/etc/resolv.conf

scutil --dns

Also, the nameservers produced by the first command should match the first "resolver #1" nameservers listed by the second command.

If not, i suggest we restore the symlink.

Hmm, okay.

Being that both your prompt's hostname and the nameserver address lie within the private 192.168.x.x domain range, i'll conclude there is no "danger" in your config. You must have installed some software which replaced that symlink with a file... so it must know what it's doing. [though, i still find it a bit odd —if not unnecessary —for anything to do things that way.]

Being that you have 10.5.x, i will post a command to restore normality:

sudo ln -sfhv /var/run/resolv.conf /private/etc/resolv.conf

...and you can decide whether or not to execute it. [if this was my Leopard machine, i would do that myself.]

At least there will be one less line in the permissions repair report.

[Who knows... it may also end up having some effect on the unmounting issue in post #1.]

Well, did it and it didn't fix my problem.

In any case, any thoughts on the -36 error? I didn't have it on Snow Leopard, only after downgrading. I really doubt the HD died during that. I don't really wanna upgrade back to SL...it broke Halo in ways that no one's been able to fix.
