    UGH.. ok i'm back with more issues with the same macbook. My friend has been using it a bit longer after an archive&install of leopard and she told me it's been shutting off by itself randomly -- even when it was plugged in and either sitting idle or with itunes playing.

    What would cause this??? Is it Leopard, or the hardware??

    NOTE: I'm not sure if it means anything but everytime leopard starts up a folder with a question mark flashes on the screen, but then everything loads properly.

    You could have a hardware problem. If it is shutting down while idle it could be a thermal problem or a bad temperature sensor.

    Don't panic yet. I have read your other post about the problems you ran into. I would try the following first:

    The "?" at boot time followed by normal startup indicates that your Parameter Ram (PRAM) might be corrupted. First go into System Preferences -> Startup Disk and make sure your internal disk is selected (hightlighted).

    Next I would reset the PRAM...

    Restart the system and immediately hold down cmd-opt-p-r keys. Keep holding them down until you hear the third bong and then let go. The system will then boot normally.

    Next I would do a "Safe boot" to clear out the hardware caches and run a file system check. Note that this type of boot takes much longer (could take 5 - 10 minutes) before a login window appears with "safe boot enabled" in red. At this stage hit the "go back" arrow and shutdown the system.

    Last step, do an SMC reset.

    MacBook, MacBook Pro
    If the computer is on, turn it off.
    Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    Press the Power button to restart the computer.

    After you have done all of this, monitor your system for a few days. If you are still having problems, then you definitely have a hardware problem.

    Thanks for the suggestions, merl1n. I did a few google searches before coming here and I read it could be a hardware issue relating to overheating and possibly something to do with sensors, but there wasn't any definitive answers.

    Highlighting the hdd as the startup disk fixed the ? at bootup. Thanks.

    Right now, I'm trying to re-create the automatic shutdown, but I can't seem to. I left the laptop on last night all night and it didn't shut down by itself. Is there an error log I can check to see if past shutdowns were logged??

    I'll try the PRAM and safe boot suggestions now too.

    I've reset the PRAM, booted into safe mode and performed a SMC reset. Not sure if it did anything to improve the situation.

    I still cannot get the computer to auto-shutdown. I asked a question in my last post: "Is there an error log I can check to see if past [automatic] shutdowns were logged??" ... or something that will tell me if any boards are overheating?

    /Applications/Utilities/Console launch this and look at the following logs:

    LOG DATABASE QUERIES -> Console Messages
    LOG FILES -> system.log
    /Library/Logs -> Crash Reporter -> ...
    /Library/Logs -> panic.log
    /Library/Logs -> Panic Reporter -> ...

    Also use Activity Monitor to see what processes are running when you try to shutdown.

    Is there something I should be looking for specifically? Something to narrow down the search?:( Maybe a search to search all the crashes between 2 dates?

    Just look for patterns and time stamps when the crashes occurred. If you see anything common, post that to this thread.

    Ok I would be looking for crashes between the beginning of april and now because that's when I installed leopard and when she said she started seeing the auto-shutdowns.

    I looked through the sub-items under CrashReporter and I used the search tool to search for "2008". There were a few time stamps for 2008, but all were BEFORE April '08.

    I noticed that there are 2 items under /Library/Logs -> HangReporter -> Safari from April 11 & 12, but they are greyed out and when I select them it says "You do not have permission to read this log"

    I also could not find a PanicReport section OR panic.log in the console. Any ideas why?

    EDIT: AH, it just rebooted on me. I was just about to submit the above msg on my other computer and it auto-rebooted. I'm checking the logs now, but don't see anything. Is there any application I can get to monitor the temperatures of the macbook?

    Here are the logs from system.log from the time it auto-rebooted:

    Post the system.log info just before it rebooted maybe 50 lines or so, anything containing an error and the strings that follow the error.

    I don't like the message:
    Apr 15 16:14:21 Macintosh-3 kernel[0]: disk0s2: memory allocation error.

    Also, I did a little research and I suggest you do this. This could be related to a bad memory module or bad seating of the module.

    I would shutdown the mac, unplug your power adaptor (if it is connected),take out the battery, take out the memory modules and swap slots. Make sure when you put the memory back in, it is "fully seated" in the slot. Then put the battery back in and connect your external power (if you want). Run this way for a while. If it shuts down again, put one of the memory modules and run without it. If it happens again, take out that module and put in the other. Basic troubleshooting for hardware.

    You can also run the Apple Hardware Test using the DVD that came with the MacBook. Insert the DVD, restart and immediately hold down the option key. Then select the Apple Hardware Test Partition on the blue screen and run the extended test.

    That could make sense. At the same time I archive&installed leopard,, I upgraded the ram. There used to be two sticks of 256MB (512MB), and I upgraded to 2GB (two sticks of 1GB). The macbook reads both sticks, but they may not be seated properly. I'll take them out and put them back in just in case.

    Btw, I bought the ram at a local computer shop and they are corsair branded made specifically for apple laptops.

    Also I'm not in front of the macbook at the moment but there was nothing before the first event I posted for 15. The previous event occurred at around 6:00.

    My friend does not have the DVD that came with the macbook because it wa handed down to her and all she got was the macbook. Can I downloade the tool you're talking about and burn it to CD/DVD myself?

    Ok, what I would do (if you still have the problem after re-seating/switching the RAM modules) is to re-install the Apple memory that came with the computer (if you still have it) and run for a few days with those installed.

    If after a few days (you need to make the judgement on how many days since I don't know the frequency of the shutdown problem) everything is ok (no shutdowns) then you have a high probability that one (or both possibly) of the new RAM modules is bad.

    As far as the Apple Hardware test, since you don't have the original restore DVD, you are out of luck. This DVD is model dependent and the bootable Hardware Test is on an invisible partition on the DVD and only appears during the boot loader (when you hold down the option key at restart and get the blue screen showing bootable volumes).

    I'm going to try to reseat the ram modules now and leave the macbook running for most of the day. Should I be looking for the "memory allocation error" line in system.log after I boot up?

    EDIT: I just reseated the ram and I don't see any "memory allocation error" in these logs. These logs are from when I first turned on the computer today till now. I turned on the computer, let it stay on for a bit, then shut down the computer and reseated the ram. You'll notice a bit of a gap in the times. 10:21 is when I started up the computer again after reseating the ram. But, there also was no memory error when I started up the computer the first time (in the 09:48 time range):

    You're not giving it enough time. It's an intermittent problem since your shutdowns happen randomly. Just use it this way for a few days or week to see if the problem is cured. If it shuts down again, then look in the log files and check back just before the shutdown occurred to see why it happened - memory allocation error or something else.
