In general, Leopard should be faster, just as Tiger was*. In specific circumstances (for Tiger the usual example is while spotlight is indexing) I'm sure it will be slower, just as Tiger was.

*not necessarily due to any huge architectural change, or any particular "fix", but just due to each component having optimization work done on it. WebKit is much faster, for example (that much is publicly available), but each individual improvement to it was rarely more than a few %.

My guess is that the G3 might not be officially supported, but it is so similar to the G4 architecturally that it could be made to work with relatively simple hacks (like X Post Facto).

Has anyone stumbled across any app-specific system requirements? My Macbook doesn't seem to support any iChat video chat backdrops. I checked Apple's site and google'd it, but couldn't find anything.

Updated system requirements

From the AppleInsider article:

Instead, Leopard will now require Macs with "an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor." Other system requirements include a DVD drive, built-in FireWire, at least 512MB of RAM (additional recommended), and at least 9GB of hard disk space.

Hmm, looks like I can't skate by on 512 mb ram anymore. my powerbook is perfectly fine with it on tiger now..but i guess leopard will be different.

There are systems sold today through retail channels ($1800+ systems) that have NO HOPE of running Vista at all.

quite a claim.

link?

I can't even find a desktop computer that's over 1500 dollars at a big-box retailer's website that is intended for consumers that doesn't have a built-in touch screen or something equally over-the-top like dual E6600 processors. And they all seem to have vista installed already.

I checked:

It's about running Vista. Most machines run Vista Basic, trying to run Vista Ultimate is a challenge (hardware compatibilities). I know a few people with Vista Home Premium and they've all had to reload their systems at least 3 times...

Back on topic:

How does an extra 67MHz make a difference? (why 867MHz, not the 800MHz?)

Are things like a DVD drive required because the release will be on DVD?
But wouldn't a combo drive do the install off a DVD if that is the reason?
I want to do some household upgrades, replace the 12" PowerBookG4 in the kitchen with a 20" iMac, load 10.5 on the kidz eMac (1.25 G4, no DVD writer), and maybe buy 2 old eMacs for my other kidz so they don't have to share one as they do now.
I was hoping 1ghz G4 eMacs would make the cut. The hardware requirements baffle me, are they required to run the system, or use it fully?

A combo drive should be fine as it is a DVD reader and CD writer. Officially, the minimum is 867MHz+Firewire. You may be able to get by on a machine without Firewire. I think RAM will probably be the most important factor for older machines. Buy as much as the machine can take.
