Is being Apple's policeman all you have to do? Frankly, it's really none of your business, and you are likely to cause quite a few people to get upset with you. Right or wrong, you might not want a few hundred, or thousand, people gunning for you. ....

Yes, you basically summed it up. Good advise.

its probably illegal, im sure leopard beta user has some sort of agreement with apple, it probably prohibit you from spreading any content of the software.
its probably also bad, considering there might be ppl out there who would erase there hard disk just for this.

Read the thread...he's not distributing any part of Leopard.

Still a dumb idea though...

Sounds like the OP is a sad lonely old boy trying to change the world. Its pathetic to be honest. If someone wants it bad enough to download it once I'm sure they will download it a second and third time from different sources.

I haven't or will not d/l Leopard so I'm commenting on this not as a downloader!

Having checked w/some lawyer friends who are involved w/ these types of issues, they all agreed that:

1) Material misrepresentation IS a felony (claiming the files contain one thing when in fact they are something else)
2) The same goes for pretending as though you are an authorized distributor of copyrighted software (which you clearly are NOT)
3) And, Apple has most likely already trademarked the name "Leopard", so even using it within the context of a name for a downloadable file would be yet another serious offense.

Also, your ISP may have grounds to come after you, depending on how their TOS agreement is worded.

All this just to screw with a few unprincipled slugheads who condone this type of behaviour......

The negative responses within this thread are so hilarious. The OP must be knocking his head against the wall, LOL!

Another thing is, the Administrators of the sites distributing these torrents checks the integrity to see if its real or not and there is also the users who download and informs the community if this particular file is good or not.

So, doing this would all be in vain.

It's worth pointing out that it was a good sentiment, slooksterPSV, whether or not it would work or would be a good idea. There's a lot of reasons here whey it's a dreadful idea, and that may be true, but at least you were doing it for the right reasons.

Here's what I want to do, I want to create a DMG that is the exact same size as Mac OS X Leopard DMG thing that's all over the internet, but I want to throw in some fake files in there such as - text edit documents - rtf, doc, etc. telling people to wait for WWDC and buy leopard - but yes give them the hassle of downloading 3.5GB or however much it is and mirror it. Is this bad or illegal? Or can I do this =D Sorry but people shouldn't download Leopard off the internet, they should wait like the rest of the million of us.

Wow.
Idiot.

The thing is, you would be infringing on Apple's trademarks in an attempt to make a point against the people infringing on their copyright. Two wrongs and all that....

Hopefully they were allowed to register "OS X Leopard" instead, otherwise all the zoos I know are in trouble...

:p

Also, if you post to some torrent trackers, they list all file names contained within the torrent, so you would have to name all files exactly as the original ones were.

Not worth it.

From what i recall it only shows the DMG file name under the tracker file list, since the DMG is a file in itself.

I agree that doing that for a beta is just pointless. People won't go on using the beta, unless they're really stupid and cheap. Some might however, try to leak pieces of information about the OS.

I would distribute a fake leopard file after it's released, it's not fair that some people should pay while others get away with pirating software. Plus it would be funny, and before they know it their internet downstream quota will be met, and at least the ISP won't get ripped off. Unless they're using someone else's connection...Wouldn't put it past them.
