This is an interesting thread, although reading it through, the emphasis seems to have shifted away from the initial point... or am I missing something?
My opinion on the OP's initial point is: I have never seen anyone get "chastised" when asking for advice on whether to buy now, or wait. I might just have missed it, perhaps. But I've posted in some of those threads, nearly always along the line of, "if you really need a new [whatever], buy it now. Otherwise, there's no harm in waiting, right?" ... I try not to chastise; like others have said, this is a great forum; a lot better than others I have seen! Generally, it's very welcoming and friendly, IMO.
That said, I'm not quite sure what people expect to get in reply to one of these "should I buy" threads; like someone's going to come along and say, "you have to wait... on 17th June, Apple is releasing a new iMac - brand new design for 500 bucks!" And even if they did suggest something (realistic), would they be believed?
The other point that seems to have come about in this thread is newbies asking obvious (to those with experience) questions... I really have no problem with these; I know sometimes people are lazy, but seriously, if you don't even know what to search for on Apple.com or Google, in order to get an answer to your query, this is the best place to come! Even if the thread has a single reply, with a single link to the answer, it's helped someone out. That's never bad!
