Cars are the most overrated, unnecessary item in our society. At the moment I try to organise my life without one.

I would tend to agree with you but come live a month here in Salt Lake and you quickly realize that not having a car is much the same as just cutting your legs off.

Many people here are going to hate me for this one, but we are just talking about a big pile of steel, transformed with a lot of energy and filled up with oil every now and then and that's it. All that energy just that you can drive around the corner to do some shopping. What a waste!

And I know exactly what you mean. Our society was transformed into a "car society" within a very short period of time (less than my lifetime!). The western world was made dependent on cars.

I can still remember my grandparents. They were the happiest and most satisfied people I have ever met in my life. They didn't have a car. They were not even dreaming of a car. While living in middle of nowhere, hardly any public transport, they were able to do all the things I did in my life (okay, they haven't been overseas, mainly because they were not rich, but they had holidays wherever they wanted).

So my answer is: No, if you want to have a life without car, do it. It might be hard, but it's not impossible. I started a year ago to do all things on the weekend by foot and public transport (no petrol, no gym fees necessary). Now I look for a bike to get to work*, which will be about 25 kilometres one way.

* A perfect example of making a society car dependent: An office building in middle of nowhere. The next town 4 kilometres away, the next bus stop 2 kilometres. Whoever approved this building should be executed in public.

Oh, I agree. It isn't impossible but as you go west here in the States, the public transportation gets worse and worse. You can live in NY, Boston, Washington D.C. without a car easily. Denver, Salt Lake, Boise, Las Vegas: public transportation is a f***ing joke....putting it nicely. And biking anywhere here in SLC.....HA! You might as well go sign your own death warrant. NOBODY pays any attention to bicyclists here. In fact, even if you are following every law for bikes, the drivers still think you are automatically at fault just because you inconveinance them and get in the way of their SUVs.

The transit authority here in SL just recently gutted a bunch of their routes in an attempt to save some money. And it will be at least 2015 until there will be any finished expansion to the existing light rail lines (2030 is the new tax hike isn't approved).

If you are going to use public transportation here: automatically add 30-45 minutes to the commute.

I have to cycle here in England, that is pretty close to a death warrant

If people like Mathew Simmons are right, for most people cars get unaffordable in a couple of years anyway. Means more public transport, more space for your bike... you might even get a "king of the road" sign :)

Unfortunately, there won't be many "positive" aspects, if oil supplies are slowing down :(

("dood... wat happened tuh yuh?"

in my original post i would have like to meet nixon, and i know he is dead now so that is impossible...but concerning elvis, you know there are quite a few people who think they can actually meet him alive today, that's assuming you can find him :)

what the heck was wrong with the coroner(s) who was assigned to elvis, did he lose the body or something?
