I'm in-between space grey and midnight. I'm not that worried about fingerprints, but I am worried about scuffing. Can anyone with midnight share your personal experiences with this color? Yes, I've seen the same article reposted multiple times online regarding scuffing around the USB-C port, but that seems to be the only instance of where scuffing seems to be an issue, so I'm looking for real-world experiences and other considerations.

I’ve been using mine for a few days while wearing a stainless watch band. not noticeable yet.

This will fall under the other considerations you asked for:

Your computer should not be a fashion statement. It's a tool. Sure, we all want nice looking stuff but forgoing a color you really want because you are worried about scuffing around a port you cant even see is sad. Get the color you want, not the one that you think will look brand new 10 years from now, because it won't. Full disclosure: Im a midKnightrider and I have ignored every detrimental fact, guess, or assumption about my color or processor in the videos. I don't care what anyone else says. I will be the one to decide.

Been using since launch day. Plug and unplug SSD drive every day. No scuffing. Of course if you don't pay any attention and just jab at it trying to insert a device I'm sure it will scuff. But if you pay reasonable attention there is not an issue. Same thing with space grey. Normally no scuffing but if you just blindly try inserting stuff you can scuff space grey also.

I've noticed that this forum has the most number of OCD members of any forum I've ever participated in. And there are a lot. Over 25 years worth...
I think you'll find that a lot of people on this forum both upgrade regularly (resell is higher on an unmarked machine), and it's a stretch or big investment for a lot of people so they want it to stay looking new.

I can show you pics of my discoloured space grey iPad Pro 12.9 (not sure what caused it as I've only ever used an Apple Magic keyboard and folio on it, and babied it) - maybe the apple magic keyboard?) but the whole back side is discoloured, with a scratch where the silver is prevelant and if I go to sell it to upgrade, I won't get much for it based on looks alone - despite the fact it runs absolutely perfectly.

These types of things matter to people long term. And also, after spending $2K on a laptop, you don't want it marking a week later.

With the kind of damage your iPad Pro has, you are going to have to turn in your Apple Card and MR forum card. :p

j/k

If your choice is between Midnight and Space Grey, surely they share the same risk because both colours are on a silver chassis.

I've owned a space grey M1 MBA for over 18 months now and haven't seen any scuffing. I'm careful about inserting USB-C cables and take good care of my machine.

I think you only need worry if your hand-to-eye coordination is off or you're a bit accident-prone and might cause it to get scratched. Again, it'll be the same whether you had a Midnight or Space Grey. Or even a Starlight.

You're worrying too much. Get the colour you want.

Naaaaahhhhh 😁 I have bought a M1 MBA and 14” MBP since the iPad purchase

However, it has cost me a crapload in resale value 😉

I love the midnight color and I'm glad I went with it. That said, I'm paranoid now every time I connect to the USB-C ports.

My old 2016 MBP, I used to connect the ports in the dark. I finally looked at them today, and they're scuffed. Never once thought about it with that computer. Go figure.

Maybe it will be an issue and maybe it won't. But I didn't want to take that risk, so I ordered starlight just in case, despite the fact I love the look of midnight blue.

I'll have had mine for three weeks tomorrow and I have zero scuffs on the ports.

Just take care when plugging-in the cables and you'll be fine. I suspect this is no difference to any recent Mac laptop tbh. Any small marks will show-up more on the darker colours.

Appreciate your 3 week report!

I agree.. I've had many silver and space grey apple products and they all scuff to a degree eventually any way (if not taken care of). The color is just too sleek to pass up, and like everything else, it's a durable good and won't last forever.

Why can someone not have their computer as a fashion statement? It's theirs? They can do whatever they like with it.

I'm sure lots of us have had that horrible metal on metal scratching noise when trying to put a cable in to an iMac or Studio Display...
