In the past I had a fairly manual photo backup workflow. I would plug in the phone and manually drag all current photos and videos into a desktop PC. From there they would get backed up automatically to two other places.
In prep for getting a 13PM I thought I would streamline this more.

I think what I decided on was to use iCloud Photos (200gb plan) to sync my photos to the cloud. One of the reasons is I do like keeping the Live Photos intact and removing them from the Apple ecosystem breaks this.

From there I need a physical backup to my desktop PC. I’ve installed the pc iCloud extension so we’ll see how easily that works out. I’m looking for suggestions on how to automate this part a bit more.

I then (once a month or so) rename them using Advanced Renamer and they get filed in folders by month and year.

From there the pc photos get backed up to a Synology raid 1 drive and also to Box using SyncBack Pro. This happens automatically every morning when the computer turns itself on.

I’m also dealing with a 10k+ 35mm film library that I need to integrate into iCloud.

[edit] I will most likely be deleting the iCloud PC extension (because it sucks) and I’m going to be using PhotoSync to get my images over to my PC.

That is way too much unnecessary work. Just use iCloud backup and you don’t have to do any of that. I have every photo on my phone since 2012. And if you switch to iCloud photos, you can access them from any device (PC included).

I am now using iCloud Photos for my working copy of all my photos and like it so far.

The other stuff is strictly backup.
I come from the professional photography world and backups were extremely important. It is only a matter of time until a source gets corrupted or accidentally deleted (even iCloud isn’t bulletproof). I’ve seen it many times.
