so, this is the letter you got from at&t, even with the grammer as poorly written as that?

i counted 4 sentences with the wrong words in there....

does anyone else see the irony here?

this person is flaming for bad GRAMMAR, yet spells GRAMMAR wrong!

lol this is overwhelmingly ironic!!

I'm NOT planning on upgrading from my iPhone to the 3G one.. but I'm guessing I wouldn't be eligible or others that did what I did.

There was a loophole where you could buy a subsidized phone with a regular contract, activate it, buy an iPhone, activate it on the account (by adding $20 data plan), and then sell the subsidized phone for a ridiculous profit (covering the activation charges and a decent amount of the iPhone).

I know others did this (because I got the idea from people around these parts). I'm curious to see what happens to those that want to upgrade.

Aside from the letter being poorly written (meaning it is likely either fake or not an official, canned response from AT&T but from someone who may not know what they are talking about) and not knowing what specific questions you sent and are being answered, this response contradicts what AT&T spokespersons and executives have said in several articles.

In other words: don't swallow this.

Then stop coming back to this one thread and posting on it..........
I for one did not know they won't let people even buy an UNSUBSIDIZED iPhone and am glad I read this thread.

Forums are the worst source for information, go read all the AT&T statements. They have not announced the UNsubsidized price YET, but all indications are that they will when the date gets closer. In fact quoted on Macrumors.com front page.

If your relying on any forums for the your answers your going to be very very confused as most here have their head up their a$$ and haven't even bothered to do any research.

Wow, somebody is in a really pissy mood, granted there are a few people that post without even using common sense, yet alone research. But to label the majority of people here as having their heads up their asses is a statement that has no common sense involved or research. Most people here pass on information from those official statements and provide links and such as to where information could be found, or at least well-thought advice about the situation. And be prepared, after making an unthought statement like that, I would expect a lot of flaming to result that is nowhere nearly as bad as what I have just said.

I think it's more ironic that an english speaker does not know the definition of the word "grammar." Grammar has nothing to do with spelling. ;)

Actually it can be argued that grammar includes the rules of spelling. The line between the two, depending on your perspective, is either non-existent or not distinct enough to make fun of someone over.

Even leaving that out, though, the errors in the supposed response are in choice of words, nothing is misspelled.

You can argue it all you want, but from the Oxford English Dictionary:
Grammar n
1. a. That department of the study of a language which deals with its inflexional forms or other means of indicating the relations of words in the sentence, and with the rules for employing these in accordance with established usage; usually including also the department which deals with the phonetic system of the language and the principles of its representation in writing. Often preceded by an adj. designating the language referred to, as in Latin, English, French grammar.
b. general, philosophical or universal grammar: the science which analyses those distinctions in thought which it is the purpose of grammatical forms more or less completely to render in expression, and which aims to furnish a scheme of classification capable of including all the grammatical categories recognized in actual languages. historical grammar: the study of the historical development of the inflexional forms and syntactical usages of a language. comparative grammar: the comparative treatment of the phenomena of two or more related languages, with the object of determining the nature and degree of their relationship.
3. An individual's manner of using grammatical forms; speech or writing judged as good or bad according as it conforms to or violates grammatical rules; also speech or writing that is correct according to those rules.
4. The phenomena which form the subject-matter of grammar; the system of inflexions and syntactical usages characteristic of a language.

(definitions 2, 5, 6, & 7 don't apply)

It is not about the rules of the spelling, the rules of the usage of the words.

That's Not True

You will be able to purchase an iPhone at the discounted price!! It says that in the memo and on their website. You got false information from an illegitamite AT&T Hack with no life.... hee hee:D

While that is funny.... I think spelling and grammar go hand-in-hand. If you suck at one, chances are you probably suck at the other.

Let's see how much farther we can derail this thread with grammar and spelling discussion. haha

I'll simply concede that you are correct on the definition of grammar.

It is not about the rules of the spelling, the rules of the usage of the words.

... which ultimately was my point: nothing is misspelled in the letter. The errors were grammatical, even using your definition.

Anyhow, this is off topic, so moving on...

That's bull.
I can almost guarantee the new iPhone will be $199 with upgrade eligibility for anyone.
I can almost guarantee that you will be proven wrong. AT&T has repeatedly stated that upgrade eligibility rules will apply for existing AT&T customers.

BTW, can't we please have a single sticky-ed "boo hoo, AT&T are bastards for not letting me upgrade" thread?

I don't understand why they aren't selling an unsubsidized iPhone. Can anyone explain the motivation? I just don't get it..
It is widely expected than an unsubsidized price will be announced prior to July 11th. It just isn't out yet.

My understanding is that subsidy marketing was becoming a thing of the past. It was also my impression that Apple insisted there be measures in place to allow consumers to buy their latest and greatest. In other words, the iPhone is supposed to be breaking the mold and although this letter expresses some resistance to the 'new way' on July 11 you will leave with a $199 iPhone 3G and a contract through 2010.

I guess you have never bought a cell phone.

Actually, I think that you'll be eligible for upgrade. It's a nice loophole. But the current generation iPhone will probably only eligible for the 3G iPhone upgrade and not any other phone

I guess you have never bought a cell phone.

I lol'd

Actually, grammar and spelling are different...but still, very hilarious :p.

I find it even more ironic an English speaker doesn't capitalize "English" properly, but I suppose that is separate from grammar and spelling! :p
