I get a lot of Smoothie’s at Smoothie King and have always been horribly annoyed by their app.

Walgreen’s is the only store I’ve seen where they’ve got their rewards program going through Apple Pay. And it’s nice to shop at that drug store because of that. You tap once for rewards. You tap a second time for payment. All very easy. No fumbling in my wallet for a card or fumbling on my phone trying to find an app I have to open and find the right barcode...

LevelUp’s app, they want you to store a credit card directly with LevelUp. Which is a huge pain not just because it’s another place on the Internet that has your credit card info which could be hacked and stolen. But also because when I switch credit cards, it’s another place I have to remember to change it. At least when you order in-store, LevelUp let’s you not pay with their stupid app, but use a physical credit card or Apple Pay. But when you place an order through the app to be picked up later, they make you give LevelUp a credit card, completely bypassing Apple’s payment system.

Is that not a violation of Apple’s App Store rules? Why is LevelUp allowed to do alternate payment systems when we see so much news about other companies getting banned from the App Store?

If it’s not against the rules, I wish it would be. Because I do not trust this LevelUp company. I sent them an email complaining because not only were they giving me a receipt in store which I kept. But they were also junking up my email box by emailing me a receipt. I don’t like email receipts because I don’t want yet another place I have to check fro receipts when I reconcile my credit cards at the end of a billing period. Trying to get LevelUp to stop emailing me receipts, they responded by lying to me and saying it was a law that they had to email me a receipt since they were not processing the charge locally, but at a central location. Now I think they’ve fixed that, I’m not sure. I may have put a filter to mark the emails as spam. I don’t remember. But I’m not getting those receipt emails any more after I emailed them and told them they were lying about the laws.

This LevelUp company is not a small thing. They do apps for Chick-Fil-A, Zaxby’s, and just Googling them now, they do apps for like 25 different restaurants.

How do we get Apple to pull LevelUp apps until they comply with Apple’s payment system? I would love to see Apple Pay pop up when I’m checking out on their app, just like what happens on the Etsy web site.

Maybe Apple has a carve out for apps like LevelUp’s?

Contact Apple and see what they say. I'd say you have a long, uphill battle ahead of you, however.

Perhaps things will change in one way or another when App Clips become available in iOS 14.
