27" with 1080p resolution? What did you expect?

23" - 24" is absolutely maximum screen size for 1080p. If you go for larger display you gotta look for 1440p ones.

The OP bought this display for the larger pixels as they are easier to see. Though it will lose some sharpness, the extreme lack of color and clarity leads me and others to believe that there is a defective cable or adapter.

1440p and up?
IPS?

1440p means 2560x1440 resolution. A "better" resolution for 27" monitors in some people's opinion. With 1080p (1920x1080) on a 27" monitor the pixels are very obvious; a 1440p 27" provides a higher pixel density and thus a crisper image.

IPS means In-Plane Switching, a display technology that produces better color representation. Usually preferred for photo and video editing.

Skylitfly's response is akin to saying you should buy a 6-cylinder motor pickup truck when you've asked for advice on why your Honda Civic doesn't run smoothly. Certainly a worthwhile opinion to consider when you buy your next monitor, but not particularly helpful to the matter at hand.

Have you gotten rid of the Displayport to DVI to HDMI chain yet? If not, please do so and report back.

(make sure you have a DVI input on the monitor before spending money on a single minidisplayport to dvi cable... I think your monitor is HDMI input only, so you need either a minidisplayport to hdmi cable or a minidisplayport to hdmi adapter then hdmi to hdmi cable)

Thanks for summing that up in laymen's terms for me :p

This monitor was purchased well before I was deep into photography, and editing. Just for the sole purpose of working on a bigger monitor/ and being easier on the eyes. Now, instead of band aiding this issue, I think I should be investing in a better monitor for my purposes now.

Ideally sounds like I want an IPS 27"+ with a display port connection possibility.

Do as you please... 27" 1080p displays are always going to have poorer sharpness compared to a 1440p 27" displays. That being said, there is no reason it should be as poor as you describe.

Even if you go to use this as a second display for basic email and web browsing and use your new display as a primary for photos and editing. A new DVI to DVI cable will fix that and won't cost much money at all. But it is your money and you should spend it as you see fit. I just don't see the point of wasting a good monitor...

Are you positive the LG E2742 has a DVI input? I glanced at the specs and it looks like it's HDMI only. I'd hate for Sam5281 to go buy a cable that won't plug into the monitor...

No worries, glad to help clarify things.

As Altemose suggests, I also recommend getting the current monitor sorted before worrying about upgrading to a 27" IPS 2560x1440 display. You'd then be able to research and consider monitor options with reduced pressure. You might even find it works okay for your needs. (remember you're receiving advice from a wide spectrum of perfectionism and what someone else finds "unusable" may suit your particular needs just fine)

It's DVI-D on the back
