Does no one care that the consumer Warrantee on the 27UD88 is limited to 1 year? How is it that Dell can offer three years on similar monitors, but LG gets away with just one? All those great specs aren't much use if the thing dies in month 13. To me it demonstrates a lack of confidence by the manufacturer, which is off-putting. Likewise with the price; what's the true cost of ownership if replacements are required that much more frequently?

Depends completely where you live, in most European countries the standard is 2 years now AFAIK.

99% Adobe sRGB isn't particularly impressive on a 4K display. There are 4K laptops which offer 100%+ Adobe RGB and way over 100% sRGB.

This display looks nice and has ports! Now the one year warranty on the other hand...

That's telephone support

His point is valid about a poor warranty from LG in comparison to their competition in the same space on similar products (other monitors).

My LG 31MU97-B just died at the 2.5 year mark and they want $300+ to fix it. Had it been a 3 year warranty (as in his Dell example) it would have been covered.

At least LG will offer to repair out-of-warranty displays. My Dell U3011 started exhibiting the "blank screen" problem that other users are having with this display just outside of the warranty period. Dell won't even touch out-of-warranty displays, so the only option as presented by Dell was to purchase another $1500 display from them. I didn't and, after purchasing many Dell displays since 2000, won't ever again. I would have been happy to pay $300+ to have it fixed instead of being the owner of a very large, heavy, and expensive paperweight.

I guess it's a game of pick your poison then...
The price of entry matters too.

LG wants $300+ to fix just the power supply that died on the display, whereas my display that was originally $1300 is now relatively easy to find brand new for $600-700...

Soo.... what do you do?

Replace just the PSU for $300+ and wait for the next thing to die and really wish I'd just doubled up and got a totally new unit?

I'd really rather just have a good 3 year warranty and let the Russian roulette start at that point, especially since monitor tech is changing at a reasonable pace these days.

Obviously a 5 year warranty would be ideal, but these guys know they don't make things of a high enough quality to last that long and they'd also prefer to just "offer extended coverage" as another way to boost revenue. Nauseating and frustrating.

And your comment about Apple's 90 day warranty? That must mean that Apple has absolutely no confidence in its products.
Afik, all Apple Mac devices offer one-year Standard Warrantee, and an extra Two Years optional AppleCare = total 3-years. Which I've found very useful. Likewise with their now-discontinued displays. They also continue to support older devices, at a price, until deemed "obsolete" many years later.

Since Sierra, several users have claimed to have gotten 2016 Macbooks to do 4k/60hz without a patch (including a system that was never previously patched). Can anyone else confirm/deny?

I have this monitor and a 2016 MB 12", 4k60Hz works flawlessly using USB-C with Sierra Mac OS, OOTB. No hacks required. Love it. I run HiDPI 1080p, but am thinking about 1440 scaled.

I have this monitor and it's great. B&H was having a sale (for whatever reason, $100 off, but it was out of stock) So I placed an ordered and it shipped within 2 weeks, not bad, was quoted 3-5 I think. Any woot, I picked it up cause obv. its USBC. and has multiple inputs. I use the USB C for my 15" tMBP and a mini DP to DP cable from my Mac Pro. I also split my TV and use the HDMI conection so I can watch tv while at my desk. Also I can use the split screen feature.

My only complaint is that it won't charge the MBP when the screen is completely off. Not a trickle charge or anything.

All in all its a great display picture looks great. I'm a happy camper

the 27UD88 doesn't push enough power over USB-C to fuel my 15-inch MacBook Pro

Is the 5K ultrafine the only monitor on the market that can deliver more than 60W over USB-C? I haven't been able to find any others (yet)

LG rocks, all my computer display are LG. Typing this in front of my 34" 4K ultra wide!

Nice review, one important detail is missing, is the backlight flicker-free or does it use PWM?

The lg 32ud88 seems like a good Monitor. If you do photo/Video editing the P3 color range and the extra 5inches could be usefull. The extra speakers are negliable because you cant expect good Audio quality with them. i guess the price will be near 800-900€. On the other Hand you have a solid Monitor for arround 600-650€ if you Programming or doing daily work.

I've got an el cheapo LG 32" TV and the sound isn't bad at all.

I ordered this last night from Overclockers UK and its arriving with me tomorrow, I was weighing up between this and the 5K model, but for my needs I was unable to justify the additional £384! I am sure this will be just perfect for me and if I decide to get a second, the saving has almost paid for that.

How is it? Does the 1440p scaled look good?

What is a better display in this price range in your opinion?

And "lack of camera" is actually a feature to many of us..
Do I have to offer a better option? I'm commenting on the specs of THIS display, not comparing it to others. And the FaceTime camera is probably important to as many people as the number for which it is not. I realize it's 50/50, but I would rather have it and rarely if ever use it than not have it at all.

Do I have to offer a better option?

Well - yeah, sort of...

You said "just going off specs it isn't that impressive"..
Specs includes the price/value equation of the listed specs...

So if this "is not impressive", what you are comparing to that "is impressive" (and how much does that unit cost?)

Would you say it's more impressive if it was $200?
I mean, at some price point, these specs ARE impressive, are they not?
