Hi all. Just purchased a brand new 4K monitor (LG 27UK650-W 27" 4K UHD IPS Monitor with HDR10 and AMD FreeSync Technology (2018)), along with my new 15" MacBook Pro. To my understanding, the Macbook Pro is capable of outputting 4k at 60hz. However, in System Preferences, I can only get it to output 30hz. I am using Apple's HDMI dongle adaptor (it includes HDMI, USB-C, and USB-A ports), and using LG's included HDMI cable to output the video.

Are there any suggestions as to how I can get 60hz to work?

Edit: Looks like I need a USB-C to Displayport cord. Can anyone else chime in and confirm?

You are correct in your edit. Apple's adaptor uses HDMI 1.4, which isn't capable of going above 4K 30 Hz.

Whenever possible, avoid HDMI. It's a big bag of headaches. DisplayPort is far superior.

Confirm.

Just went through the same thing. Display port works with new Samsung ultra-wide when HDMI did not.

Thanks guys. Monitor is up and running at 60hz and looks amazing!

Hi there.

I’m thinking about getting this same monitor for use with my MacBook Pro. Are you still happy with it? Does it handle ‘Hi-DPI’ 1080p without any issues?

Thanks!

It has been one of my favorite purchases this year! Picture/video quality is amazing and text sharpness across documents / web browsing is of the same standard that we’ve come to love with Apple’s own displays. It also looks incredible when playing 4K games on Xbox One X. I really can’t answer the Hi-DPI question as I have yet to run it in such settings, but I have no doubt it’ll perform adequately. I’m out of town right now otherwise I’d try it out and report back on my thoughts. Overall, very very satisfied

I have the 27uk850 model and no complaints from me. A solid monitor.

Well, I'm sold!

All I mean by the Hi-DPI thing is, does it ‘do Retina’? Ie, can you run it at 4K resolution but looking like it's at 1080p in terms of desktop resolution? I assume you can, but confirmation would be welcome. :)

Yes, you will have scaling options.

I just bought this monitor but I can't get audio out of DisplayPort. I'm using a macbook pro 2017 and a usb-c to displayport adapter. Am I out of luck?

Ops, nevermind, I just realized this monitor doesn't have speakers, lol

You have to watch out. You will always have the 1920x1080 and 3840x2160 options, it seems. However, if you want 2560x1440 (the ideal UI elements sizes for 27") it depends on your connector. I've tried various hubs with HDMI (Satechi, Hyper*Drive) and also older MBP with Thunderbolt 2 (miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort), all with good cables, but they all came up negative, macOS would refuse to do true UI scaling. However, when I purchased a true 60Hz 4K USB-C to displayPort cable (I bought the one form CHOETECH on Amazon) suddenly I could do High Resolution 2560x1440, that is the UI looks like it's 2560x1440 but the monitor receives a 3840x2160 signal. macOS is finicky if it offers you the true high res UI scaling. You might get the situation where the monitor can be driven in 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 at high res UI, but not at 2560x1440. And that is all on the Mac's side, because when the Mac can drive it at 3840x2160, it should be able to make use of that resolution with scaled UI, but it often doesn't for some mysterious reason.

Hi All

I have a 2107 MBP and two of the LG27UK650 monitors connected by USB-C to Display Port. However I am facing real issues where by the monitors dont display when waking up the MBP. No matter what I do, the monitors just wont pick up a display signal. My resolution is to use the laptop screen to restart and turn the monitors on at just the right time. Dont know if the power save functionality of the monitors is causing the issue but I have disabled power saving on each monitor. Having said that the monitors almost immediately go to sleep if they dont detect a signal so they still are using some sort of power saving still.

I have ordered a couple of USB-C to HDMI cables to see if that helps but this is really causing me a lot of issues. Anyone else having similar issues?

Cheers

Does it have a VESA mount? It does not like it - but that would be strange, seems to be standard these days

Yes, both monitors are mounted on an arm but not sure what issue that would cause? I had one monitor and the MBP on last night but not he second monitor. Not matter what I did I couldn't get the second display to fire up. I unplugged/replugged the display cable, turned the monitor on/off. But it just kept going in to power save mode. I had to reboot and then turn the monitor on during the boot screen to get it to work.

Just to follow up, I am now using USB-C to HDMI cables and everything is working as expected. All monitors come on when waking the laptop. If anyone has an idea why I was experiencing those issues I would be interested to know.

Thanks

[doublepost=1545161456][/doublepost]I seem to be having the same problem as a-----c in that I'm using the supplied HDMI to HDMI cable that came with the monitor to connect between a new Mac mini and the monitor seems to time out before making a connection with the computer. I've disabled all of the power saving features to no avail. I'm going to order a USB C to display port cable in the hopes that might do it.

This is the monitor I'm currently looking at. I found a great deal and am on the fence. It's this and a cal digit TS3 plus or just a 27uk850.
