LG Innotek to Begin Mass Producing Flexible Printed Circuit Boards With Eye on 2018's 'iPhone 9'

LG Innotek will begin mass production of flexible printed circuit boards in 2018, with supply chain sources stating that the supplier aims to become one of the main FPCB manufacturers for the "iPhone 9" (via The Korea Economic Daily).

The sources said that LG Innotek is nearing the completion of development on its first FPCB run, and will "likely" break ground for FPCB-focused facilities in the second half of 2017. The supplier is focusing on becoming a main FPCB component maker for Apple and LG Electronics, and would enter into the field currently dominated by Samsung and its production on FPCB components for the 2017 iPhone 8.

LG Innotek is set to kick-start the mass production of flexible printed circuit boards for smartphones from next year. With this move to become a flexible PCB supplier for Apple's iPhone, LG Innotek would pose a challenge to Samsung Electro-Mechanics which has already accumulated know-how in this area.

According to industry sources on June 25, LG Innotek has almost completed the development of flexible PCBs and would likely to break the ground for related facilities in the latter half of this year. LG Innotek aims to become a main flexible PCB supplier for Apple and LG Electronics.

With Apple's move to an OLED display in the iPhone 8 this year, the company had to source flexible PCBs because existing PCBs were incompatible with the new flexible OLED screen. Although early rumors pointed towards a display with a curved edges around the sides of the iPhone, it's now expected that the iPhone 8 will have the same slightly curved 2.5D display of the iPhone 7.

The supply chain report today is the second story in the past few weeks that has already begun looking towards next year and the so-called "iPhone 9" that is expected to launch fall 2018. In May, sources knowledgeable of Apple's and Samsung's iPhone 9 supply chain talks said that the 2018 smartphone will launch in two OLED screen sizes: 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch.

So I expect next year's version will only have two sizes, basically the same size as our current 7/7 Plus but with more screen.

I wonder if rumors about micro LED will come to fruition?

My feeling is next year's model will be the iPhone 8 as this year's 2 LCD phones will be the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S+ and to differentiate the 10 year model it will be the iPhone X (X being 10 in roman numerals)
 
I'm a but sceptical about these namings still. iPhone 8 this year, 9 next? Will believe they skip 7S when I see it.
 
Welp the iPhone 8 rumours were nice while they lasted. Who honestly cares about that thing anymore? Pffft don’t make me laugh. It’s all about the iPhone 9 now!
 
Honestly this year's iPhone feels like a bit of a letdown. I don't want an iPhone 6SSS Galaxy Edition. Save your money and wait for the iPhone 9 UltraCycle!!!!!!!!!

Apple needs to have started developing IPhone 9 already, I'm just not sure I'm ready for the rumor mill to be 2 phones ahead of the current release.
 
Seems to be a lot of confusion in this thread. This is a not a stand alone iPhone rumor about design or leaks, it's about LG being a component part supplier regarding circuit boards for a future iPhone. Granted it's still says "iPhone 9", but its mainly about the supplier in this article.

Psssh, iPhone 50. Highlighted feature will be updated Siri and 3D emoji. I can't wait for iPhone 666. Highlighted feature will be level 3 demon summoning. This will be followed shortly thereafter by Samsung's Galaxy S667 with level 7 demon summoning in 5D and 253K resolution with SuperMicrOLED embedded AR/VR/RR (real reality) and of course, a headphone jack. Bixby will still not work in English (but will be better than Siri).

I have it on good authority that iPhone 50 gets embedded in your skull. Direct neural interfacing is where it is at. The iPhone will cost $50 but the operation will set you back $50,000.

This is a big problem. Lots of tech being promoted as the next gen battery tech but nothing being adopted.

I suspect one issue is reliability and thus liability issues. No new battery tech will be adopted without years of testing to verify lower fire risk.

with the coming and inovative iPhone 9 we will be able to connect to our innovative mbps without any dongle.
 
By the 50th iteration, the iPhone would have been long gone. They will be remembered as those gigantic bricks their grandfathers used to tote around. The smart watch, smart buds, smart contacts and smart intraocular/inner-ear implants will keep us communicated with natural language and AR.
 
But don't for get the Epic Development of the iPhone 25 where Apple finally solved the Gravity Problem an made the First iPhone which usually didn't fall to the ground when dropped. The whole Tech was a Old Patent from Steve which had its first application in the "Reality Distortion Feld" which Steve liked to use at keynotes and around Infinity Drive.
The only problems where that sometimes the equipment got tangled in the 7th and 9th Dimension. So that when some one dropped there iPhone in London a Binary in LA would Fly to the Ceiling if the Owner was lucky and not outside. Rumours were circulating that some iPhones went Orbital. :D:p
