Not enough brand recognition or value for another company to buy LG.

They’re known for weird designs and fall a bit low in terms of product recognition.

Good luck getting support for the LG phones out in the wild.

Then again, good luck getting support for their problematic OLED TVs either.

Wow, not being able to find a buyer is going to be hard on all the people who worked for them. Sad to see a bit more competition dying off.
Love these posts pretending to care about employees people don't even know personally. Don't worry about LG it's only their cellular division. I'm sure LG will find positions for those employees. LG in general isn't closing. 🙄

It’s a real shame honestly. Whilst for me (and most people, if not everyone, in this forum) it makes absolutely no difference (never owned nor planned to own an LG phone), the fact they couldn’t find a buyer for their smartphone division will be terrible news for the folks that work there. Let’s hope they can find a job at other manufacturers.

That's sad, I really thought that Rollable, if it worked, actually would be the way to go (for me).

I hate the creases and change in perspective you get with a truly foldable display; so I thought this roll would be the perfect compromise between size and expandability.

The real winner is Samsung, with one less competitor in the Android market. But Apple may prefer to use LG as a supplier now that it's no longer a competitor rather than Samsung.

As for its IP and patents, LG can still license them or sell them individually.

One of my early cell phones was the LG-CU500. I loved that thing. Awesome phone that legitimately delayed my foray into smart phones because it was so good.

Anyways, I like LG. Their OLED TVs are phenomenal!

Wow. This is a bigger surprise than the slaying of Palm and Blackberry. Not to mention; can't find a buyer? No other manufacturer (Samsung) of smartphones saw fit to expand their lineup or just purchase the IP? That's something.
Samsung and LG are Rivals, ( from a Western perspective it may be more accurate to describe them as "enemies" than rivals ) not just Smartphones or electronics but in all places. Not a single chance.

This is concerning as we March towards a duopoly of Apple and Samsung. Of course, we still have Huawei but I’m not sure that’s a good thing either if they continue to rise.

my first cellphone - ever - was an LG. Their flip phones were good, smartphones not so much I hear.

Not quite yet. Xiaomi and BBK, ( That is OnePlus, RealMe, Vivo, Oppo ), Previously Huawei, Samsung and Apple represent 55% of market shares, without Huawei I think most of those will goes to Xiaomi or BBK. So you are looking at least 4, far from Duopoly.

Samsung really isn't the winner since LG hasn't been a competitor in the Android market for a long time. They reside firmly in the "Other" category. Someone up thread said it perfectly, Android is basically Samsung vs Chinese brands. The Chinese brands are slowly but surely eroding Samsung's worldwide market share and they've already ground Samsung's bones into powder in their home market.

But Xiaomi and the BBK brands don't have as much as market coverage as Samsung, especially in western countries. Eg. in the US, when you are looking for a flagship phone, it's literally the choice between Apple or Samsung.

That would be a very bad play on LG’s part. To be honest, a lot of people use LG Phones. Not as much as Apple and Samsung but people still use LG Phones. It specifically for their household electronics like the Refrigerators, Washers and Dryers. So LG, you might not want to go down that steep road.

Why? What "IP" does LG have over Samsung? There's almost no difference between the Android manufacturers these days. All are rocking some form of OLED screen, Snapdragon XXX, way too much RAM and 128-512 storage. That's part of the problem of being an Android vendor.. how do you make your phone stand above others? It aint your custom Android skin.. that's for sure.
Way too much RAM? what's that? I never hear of such a thing 🤣

Sad news - that were really great mobiles but the marketing was not good. And it was always for a wicked audience - but fantastic quality. Way better than any apple product!!!

Well I have had iPhones since the 3G but we bought a mid-tier LG for wife’s mom and seems to be a good, reliable phone after 18 months.
