Apple has commissioned LG Display to develop a display panel destined for a foldable iPhone, according to the Chinese-language version of DigiTimes.

Citing industry sources, DigiTimes claims that LG Display is assisting Apple with the development of a foldable OLED display panel for an iPhone. It is not clear, however, if LG Display will supply Apple with this display panel for mass production once it has been developed.

Samsung has been rumored to be Apple's supplier of choice for an OLED foldable display and the company was said to have provided Apple with a large number of foldable display samples for testing last year, so it is unclear how the news of a collaboration with LG fits into this. Apple has used both LG and Samsung OLED displays for the iPhone to date, and it is possible that the display for the long-rumored foldable iPhone may be provided by both suppliers.

Yesterday, it was reported that Apple is planning to launch a foldable iPhone with a 7-inch OLED display and Apple Pencil support as soon as 2023. Apple has been researching foldable devices since 2016, but rumors surrounding a foldable iPhone have noticeably increased in recent months, suggesting that the device may be gathering momentum behind the scenes.

I see this as more of an inbetween an iphone and an ipad. a new market. at least at first.

Apple's clearly doing everything to avoid Samsung. I doubt Apple forgives or forgets.

They completely cut out Samsung from their mini LED supply chain. No surprise Apple is grooming LG and probably BOE for foldables.

Please just don't make it a requirement. If you want max CPU, RAM, Camera and/or battery life.

I'm not against foldable per se. I just don't want to make any compromises in durability, scratch resistance or image quality. Moving parts are generally less reliable than static parts.

Can Apple actually do something by itself for once without having to partner with another company?

It would be interesting if displays could be paper thin and run on small processors producing something akin to the newspaper in "Minority Report". I always thought that was a brilliant idea when I first saw it.

Personally, I am way less interested in a folding phone than I am adding Pencil support to the Pro line. These Pros offer massive screens. Near Field Note-sized. Would make great, powerful sketch pads.
The moment Pencil support is added to iPhone (especially if that addition is possible via software update) I'll one-click acquire a compatible Pencil. And Pencil sales will explode.

Yeah yeah, I know what Steve said about the stylus. But tapping away in Messages and sketching an idea are very different needs. For the former, my sausages suffice. For the later, not so much.

LG, you do not have time to be messing with folding phones. Get building those 32-inch Apple displays (notice the 27 is still ‘unavailable’ on the UK Apple store).

It’s still too small for a pencil. Needs width and added ui to take advantage of the screen real estate.

This is OLED. LG and Samsung are in full retreat from LCD production.
