I was thinking about where I actually would want a folding screen. I think a laptop with a folding screen might be pretty cool. Depending upon how you design it you could have a very small laptop with an unfolded normal screen or a normal size laptop with screen extensions for more stuff. That would be useful.

I see this as more of an inbetween an iphone and an ipad. a new market. at least at first.
Durability and longevity is key for a product such as this. Price, I am sure of people are willing to drop the cash for a hybrid type device. Look at the AirPod Max.

Folding phones are here to stay so it’s nice to see Apple working on it.

If Apple was interested in bringing a foldable iPhone to market we would be seeing
More activity While I’m not ruling it out I’m not counting on it

Am I the only one to remember how much people complained about the foldable iPad?

"We believe glass will be a key component of the ultimate cover solution. That said, we also know today’s glass solutions still need to be improved."
Even Corning admits foldable glass solutions are not there yet. The real question is...how long will it take before they are?

Regardless, not everyone wants this so I hope Apple doesn't do what they have done so many times in the past...suddenly (and prematurely) force everyone to a product with loss of functionality (MagSafe, headphone jack, home button, click wheel, USB-C ports ONLY, etc.) or features hardly anyone likes (e.g. Touch Bar).

What activity do you think you’d be seeing? There have been rumors now and again for at least a year.

I'm interested to see Apple's take, but I don't think it will be something that appeals to me. Maybe when going on a weekend trip it would be nice to have a larger device than a phone without having to take an iPad or Mac, but that's stretching it, particularly if this thing costs £2.5K or more, which could easily be the case given where Samsung is at with pricing.

It’s very difficult to make glass that is both scratch resistant and malleable. Could be awhile.

Apple does not manufacture many components within its devices, it depends on other parties to demonstrate and incorporate it into a viable product.

Its not about being first, it’s about doing it right.

That is the Achilles heel about folding phones, durability. LG does make a folding phone (LG G8X) that uses separate multiple screens. Maybe that would be a lot more useful?

Excellent video. I really like the dual screen case.

The question being is that maybe you don’t want it, that does not mean there is no market for it. In a similar vein to the iPhone 12 mini, AirPods Max, etc.

Apple like any company has to balance its hit products with miss products. Apple has been fortunate to have more hit products than miss. Do I personally feel a bendable/foldable phone and display will be either, I am not sure maybe by the time it’s ready the market would have accepted and look forward to such a device, maybe not today but in years ahead.

You are comparing your use case of present to what of the future and software works in lockstep with hardware to transition to that goal.

Excellent video. I really like the dual screen case.
Brings up an interesting point of the flat sides design of the iPhone 12, now another display can magnetically attach and stay in place while the optical illusion of narrower bezels fits in well with a dual display implementation relating to a version 1 product.

It’s still too small for a pencil. Needs width and added ui to take advantage of the screen real estate.
I agree it's small, and Apple didn't want to associate the iPhone with Blackberry (having a pencil/stylus). However, I know a lot of designers/illustrators who could work magic with that smaller screen and an Apple Pencil.

They could, but why would they want to?

I’m started to seriously consider the affect this kind of news/rum ors is having on the actual business relationships and developments occurring at Apple.

there’s a quantum physics idiom that says “that which you observe you also change”, and given the affect of the reporting on the Hyandai/Kia Apple car rumours recently and the tangible conflicts of statements that were released (and corresponding share price changes that resulted), I can’t help but wonder if there is a negative price being paid somewhere whenever macrumors (and others) report on these rumours?
Have we negatively affected any potential LG/Apple collaboration or a foldable product by pre-emptively reporting on it as if it could be true?

Sorry for the strange post, just had this deep thought when I saw the headline of this article (regardless of its actually true) and seeing the affect of the Kia/Apple car fiasco play out. I might have to consider whether being a part of this rumour culture is the right thing to do. Any one else feel similar way?
