I had nothing but issues from day one with the UltraFine and my 13" MbP. Today I finally had enough and returned it. Looking at reviews of other LG monitors it seems that many of their screens in the past have had sleep/wake issues with MacBook Pros. . . plot thickens.

Anybody figured anything new out?

While I thought I fixed mine with the Belkin cable, I had an acute bout of random monitor shutdowns while using the monitor a few weeks later, but it cleared up by itself within a day or two. Now three weeks later, it is happening again. For the last two days, every few minutes of use the monitor shuts down and becomes unresponsive (though my external HDDs connected through it are still usable). The only fix is to completely shut down and restart the computer. Unplugging either the Belkin cable or the power cable for the monitor doesn't seem to do anything.

No issues with my 4k or 5k display paired with a 15" tbMBP. Both of my displays were recent purchases (in the last week) and I am running Mac OS 10.12.4 beta. Maybe it's an issue that's fixed in the beta.

I'm still having some wake problems, but none with it shutting down unexpectedly. When I wake and the 4K stays black, I unplug/plug it in 2-3 times and it will finally come on.

One thing I notice is when I plug the 4K back in to the MBP, I have to wiggle the connector a bit, and that makes a difference. Seems like there's a bad connection. I haven't tried any other cables, only the one that came with the 4K. On 10.12.3 at least it isn't crashing anymore.

I don't mean to spam this thread with what might be an unrelated issue to the OP, but I wanted to give an update. I bought yet another Belkin USB3.1 C to C, and it didn't help at all. Today I had the same issue, and now that I have three cables to play with I've done some more experimenting. It seems that the random shutdown issue lies with the left side ports on the laptop itself, and seems that it might depend on heat, as it worked fine earlier this morning and then randomly shut down and refuses to work now, while the right side ports work fine. Even directly plugging in my external HDD to the left side ports is now not working. I suppose I'll be talking to support about getting the ports checked out somehow.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Do a Reset Your NVRAM and see if that helps!

I'm considering picking up a new 13" tbMBP and pairing it with the LG UltraFine 4K Display. Any updates to this issue? Has anyone had a chance to test out this arrangement to see if the updated hardware fixed the sleep/wake issues? TIA

I have a Macbook 15" with touchbar which I just received, and I am using with my LG Ultrafine 4k display.

So the issue is, when the Macbook wakes from sleep, the Ultrafine 4k monitor still stays black, while the laptop still think it is connected. Have any of you encountered the same issue?

Excuse the obvious, but is the laptop plugged in? Mine would not display unless it was plugged in and charging.

I have a Macbook 2015 12" and purchased a LG Ultrafine K4 2 days ago. Since that time I've unplugged the power cord from the MacBook 2 times to watch TV in another room. Both times the screen was black when I opened the book and the book was unresponsive to poking. Attempts to restart with the power button failed -- the screen hung half way on the startup white horizontal line. I booted into safe mode, ran disk utility repairs (nothing showed bad), then restarted the machine. One time it restarted normally, one time with video glitches - another restart fixed that one.

All I have plugged into the Ultrafine is the power cord.

I called Apple -- they suggested SMC reboot, which I've done. I'm about 20 feet from the router and have power nap currently off.

I'll update if I figure anything out.

Update 4/2017 -- I just got my MacBook back from Apple -- turns out the hard drive was bad and replaced under apple care (Logic board). So my apologies -- the MacBook 2015 was the cause of my problems, not the LG Ultrafine 4K.

I've had the MacBook for the last two weeks with the LG hookup -- no problems of any sort.
Hi. I would be grateful if you could help me with this. I have Macbook 2015 and am considering to buy LG Ultrafine 4k but I'm concerned about if it support 4k@60hz via USB C without any cpu throttling or lag.

If it's running around sub 60hz, does it allow you to set to at a lower resolution eg 1440p?

Thanks!

From stack exchange:

I had a similar issue. I have two UltraFine 4K monitors connected to a 2016 MacBook Pro. When the Mac went to sleep both displays went to sleep, but only one would wake.

This has been resolved by the latest firmware.

  1. Install LG Screen Manager. The LG site is still showing the old version.
  2. It will push the most recent version, v2.06.
  3. Upgrade your monitor to the latest firmware. (3.11, 3.4, 5226, 3.04, 0.2f)

How do you get the 3.11 version? I downloaded the updater and it says current software is up to date, but shows me (3.00, 5249, 4.13, 0.3).

I am having the same issues with the sleep/wake on this display

Guys any news ? I'm tired of this issue... Apple Support just sucks the time with zero results...

Just in case people still have this issue, at first I used to plug and unplug the monitor to fix it (always worked). I now have another workaround thats a bit nicer. When the system wakes up and the LG is still blank, use hot-corner to make the screens go to sleep and immediately move the mouse to unsleep, do this again and the second time the LG will always wake up and work.
