Well for $1699 Apple will sell you a 5K 27" monitor with Apple aesthetics and features (e.g., an entry level iMac). Sort of pricey, but hey, it does come with a few extra features compared to most monitors... ;)

What problems?
I have the LG 5k Display Running with a 2019 MBP 15 and it works perfectly. Great picture quality.

just broke my wonderful 4k UltraFine 21.5 inch. yanked hard to the side and the USB cable bent down the pins in the monitor jack. had the monitor working perfectly since January 2017. sad

When did LG update the case on these displays and make their bezels symmetrical? The thicker portion on one edge (the top?) really put me off what otherwise seemed a decent product.

As much as I appreciate that this is the only good non-apple display mine had issues with ghosting which, at this price point is ridiculous. Perfect piece of kit otherwise.

Is this the best display for MBPs? If not what are some other good options within a similar price range or lower?

The LGs are not good because they are very glossy.

The best ones are:

HP Z27 27" 4K UHD
Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Monitor: U2720Q
BenQ PD2720U 27" 4K UHD

Also, the LGs have HUGE bezels!

woah, that sounds bad. But if it still has warranty, they have to repair it no matter what.

bought mine a year ago and we have 2 years warranty here in Germany. Still sucks, I hope it doesn’t crap out anytime soon.

That's an issue for such a fraction of the time for a tiny number of users, as to be almost inconsequential.

I’ve run into the issue with 15” MBPs running things like handbrake and xcode. If you’re running just Office or what-not you’re fine with 60W supply. Anything that gets the fans going, and you need the full wattage.

I won't buy one of these LGs with all the problems associated. I still have a 27" Thunderbolt Display and a 30" Cinema Display on my 15" MPB. I hope to upgrade to a 16" MBP soon but find it really hard to justify a $6K Apple display. We really need an Apple-branded 5K display.

I have two of these LG screens. Never had a problem with either. I love them. The color is amazing.

Sounds like there’s something wrong with your machine. I run C4D all day long on a 15” MBP plugged into this screen without issue.

Agreed. Had a 30" ACD for years but it got tired and lost its brightness. My 2015 iMac retina has been issue free since new, but I'd really like to have a 30" size again. I really love the 5K display and would never go back to a lesser rez. If Apple again made some mid priced semi-pro stand-alone displays at modern resolutions, they'd be seeing my money.

I’d really like one with some sort of built in graphics card. My 16” can’t even run a basic 1080p HDMI monitor without the fans going to 50% or higher.

I've been helping my dad build out his home workstation and this is the right monitor for him.

After being unable to get it from apple, I had my dad grab one off Amazon from a marketplace seller and the thing was defective!

This product is sold out in retail everywhere I can find, and I think the 5K is just too much for him.

The whole point of this particular monitor is so that he has a single TB3 cable to plug his laptop in and get power and all his usb devices running off the back of the monitor. Have his media keys and display brightness all work properly.

Is there any Apple-friendly TB3 monitor other than this 4k that can stand in for this monitor? It is hard to believe that Apple literally has no mid-market external display, even from a partner, that is available. It seems totally off to me.
