Do songs you add to playlist from a search also add them to library or do you have to do it in two steps?

That’s an option that you can toggle on or off. It’s in settings for iOS (settings -> music -> Add Playlist Songs), and the topmost option in the advanced tab of the app preferences for MacOS.
