Same here. All my stuff is in the cloud. The only weirdness comes when your macs storage is taken up in massive amounts by “other” for no understandable reason. I barely use anything and other is taking up 50 gigs. Seems a bit much to me
My MBA uses 23Gb in total. All apps, system, data, the lot, something must be amiss, I'd suggest.

I've never used SD cards, even on my current MBA, or MBP that i sold ages ago. but i always find hard drives would be more better for capacity..

And unlike SD cards, you can't really loose them :) Even USB flash is good, but i keep loosing them as well.

I have the flush adapters and have a 128GB microSD card. I use it exclusively for Time Machine. As you said, it's not something I use normally (and I can always use an USB SD reader if I need to read an SD card). But it gives me always available local backups that can transfer at great speed.

I have 128GB only in this 2017 MBA, split into 2x64GB partitions as I keep two OS on it. I don't really use it for anything permanent as it's mostly for testing new macOS versions (e.g. 10.15 betas) and as an internet browsing machine. Really, I got it new from Best Buy for 650 bucks so have zero complaints. I think the sweet spot for me is 256G so when I bought a 2018 Mini I made sure to get the 256TB model as I didn't feel anything smaller would have longevity for what I needed.
