During the original keynote it was said that the watch screen would come on if you just turned your wrist as if to check the time.

D dacreativeguy macrumors 68020 Mar 9, 2015 #3 Might be a combination of technologies at play. During the keynote when the guy was demonstrating all the apps on the watches mounted to the podium, it looked like he waved his hand over it a few times to clear the current action.
