spoke with tier 2 and he asked me to send pics. He then forwarded those pics to some engineers and he will give me a call when he knows a bit more. I will keep you posted when I know more.

Btw, if I just do light stuff like internet, text etc then the display is just perfect.
Quite expensive typing machine :)))
Anyway, we will see when I get the answer.

So what can we do now? Restart every time? (about to get a MBP Matte Screen for Photowork & Graphic Design)

I guess not only antiglare(matte) screens are affected - it is quite obvious that laptops with glossy screens share the same design/build though they use different brands/models of the screen

it is possible that some particular model of the screen is more sensitive to that thermal action of hot air from cooling system

I wander about the screen's quality on 2.93GHz UMBP17" as they going to produce even more heat!?

Could someone who own 2.93GHz UMBP17" leave some feedbacks about screen's quality when laptop is cold as well as after it getting hot from intensive use of CPU and GPU.

Thanks

I notice this problem after using Handbrake. It would be good to know how much this affects the users with the glass. It's not the end of the world and can only be seen under certain conditions (at least in my case), but it is clearly a design fault.

What's more curious and concerning for me is the high-pitched sound that gets emitted from my left speaker (it's happening more and more) that changes in pitch when I dim and brighten the screen. I called Apple about this and engineering is supposed to get back to me any day now...

Hello guys. Is angus y y here.

I have tried to contact apple via the feedback site. But no replies from them yet.

Aparently the glass helps to spread the heat and protect the panel a bit. So it is not as serious as the matte.

May be we can all have a new Rev.B Macbook Pro 17 inches exchange for free. personally i think this is not acceptable for a laptop.

hi everyone!

I'm constantly have eyestrain when working on my new unibody MBP17" Antiglare (already 3rd unit (2nd replacement) - i can feel how it's flickering.

Thought my 3rd unit has no screen flickering issues on low screen's brightness settings as it was with first two units but I can see pretty much clear now how my Display flickers in certain conditions - as an example check this image:

1000x30072dpi.jpg

This flickering became even more obvious when this kind of image located in the bottom part of the screen on my laptop.
You can save this image (check the attachment) and try to open it on your Mac. Please give it a try and let us know if you can see anything.

Thanks!

Huh. Well spotted. Doesn't happen on the Windows notebooks I have at hand - Precision M6400 with the RGBLED display, XPS 16 (also with RGBLED), Sony SZ, Z and TT. Same thing however happens on the UB Macbook I have to hand here, not just the MBP17.

I'd seen similar, thought it was my imagination at the time. Not so, it seems. For a fleeting moment I thought it might be a 9400M issue, but if anything it's worse when on the 9600M.

I mean - I do almost all of my graphics work on Windows PC's, which in my experience actually have a higher chance of 'just working' if you actually know what you're doing. Why put yourself through these hoops?

EDIT: BTW I don't have any light bleed worth mentioning (in comparison to other comparable machines) on the matte MBP17's so the original issue is not a problem with me.

Haha bet you feel stupid now.
Anyway its interesting how the Glossy doesn't have any lightbleed but the matte does, seems the matte people are paying more for a lower quality screen?

Every single LCD display has some backlight bleeding to some degree it's just one of the flaws from the lcd technology.

Dead/stuck pixels and backlight bleeding/flashlights are the flaws of LCD technology. This is why I wish oled would release soon.

This is interesting. It does flicker but when you zoom one not in preview the flickering is not there anymore. I think it could be an illusion of the strips etc. so the eye registers it more. Just a thought

I saved the image and flashed it up on Preview + Photoshop, and ACDSee on Windows. See my results above.

I'm lazy to check that fully with mine UMBP17, but your bleed is abnormal. Mine has a bit (in one of the corners) but nothing as bad as yours.

Get the laptop to Apple and ask for repair/replacement.

I did some of my own testing. Here are the computers tested:

Powerbook G4 Aluminum 15" - No flicker
iMac 24" (2006) - No flicker
Macbook Pro 15" (Late 2007) - Flicker
Custom Built PC Desktop - No flicker
Another Custom Built PC Desktop running OS X - No Flicker

Basically the only one that exhibited flicker was my macbook pro 15" from late 2007.

Also note that if you zoom in or out on the image then no flickering occurs. Very interesting.

I have a 2.93GHz Glossy Screen 17" and I can confirm that this issue does not happen on my machine. The glass gets hot but it doesn't effect the screen underneath so I would surmise that the Glass insulates the screen from damage due to heat out of the back vents. Hope this helps.

I'm confused - how could glass on the FRONT of your screen provide heat insulation from vents coming out the back of the lower case?

Or - are you finding the MBP draws air in from the back and exhausts it from the top of the keyboard?

I don't know. But even with hot air coming out of the case near the hinge the screen is fine no back light bleeding at all.

That image flickers on my 15" MBP. I can test it out on my 24" iMac when it gets here...

Although...no LCDs are perfect. Every PC I've owned has had some sort of display weirdness. You shouldn't let it bother you. Get a replacement machine, see if it's better. If not, live with it. It's a tool.

Flickering when viewing those lines = inversion. Even my 23" ACD has it but not on the same inversion profile as my ubMBP.

My backlighting seems pretty even, will test out the GPU/CPU on load thingy.
