I'm going to guess s/he paid $57 (3 @ $19) + tax just like anyone else buying a lightning cable from Apple.

yep. Thats it. Using the apple store app, I was actually able to see the cable was available for local pickup. Instead of buying it with the store app (because I couldn't find an easy way to change my quantity to 3) I just went in to pick up.

the apple cable has an authentication chip in it that third parties don't. might not work, so its a risk.

I dont think the cables have an authentication chip like the car keys have on their fobs, that wont work with the original car key fobs.

I doubt, apple has come to that stage as of yet.. even if it is.. they wont sell something like that for cheap.. :D

I have a question about Lightning cables.
Is it a possibility that the tip of the chip breaks inside the iphone port? i mean if the cable bends to an "L" position from the port end.. or the phone falls off while charging?? Its just a tiny plastic tip.. wondering!??

really not difficult to incorporate the chip. thunderbolt cables have a chip on each end.

Why do you need 4 cables?
Are they any longer then the one that comes with the phone?

2 for me, 2 for the wife. One each for the car, one each for the house.
