I have a lightning dock which I use in the living room for occasionally topping up the family phones and also for charging AirPods etc. Does anyone know if it would be compatible with a usb-c charger for faster charging, while still working with older phones like the original SE and AirPods?

Does the dock have a usb-c port? If so, what is the wattage output of said port? iPhone can take anything over 5w as "fast charging". Charging speed will cap around 23w, iPad Pro and iPhone 11pro shipped with an 18w adapter. The 30w apple adapter will get you a bit faster charging speeds ($50 vs. the $20 for the 18w). Dock needs to also be usb-c PD to get top speeds. Short answer, doubt it, unless it explicitly advertised as such. Fast charging is a device feature/limitation, not a usb-c feature. No way a new cord can magically make an original SE support faster charging rates and usb-c PD.

Its a lightning connector on top where the phone sits on it, and a lightning input on the back which you plug a cable into - its pretty much just a lump of metal I think so should pass things through? I don’t need it to fast charge old phones, just work with them. So eg if I have a USB-C 20w charger and a USB-C to lightning cable, an old ‘slow charging’ phone will still work on that, just slow?

It's just a pass-through, it'll charge as fast as whatever brick you plug it into will allow. Think of it like an extension to the cable.
