Lightning EarPod issue??

Normally I use Bluetooth, but today I had to use my EarPods for phone calls. I have a strange issue with the EarPods. When I make a phone call incoming or outgoing nobody can hear me, but I can hear them and there is a very discreet static noise during calls. Music works fine though. Anybody have any idea what the issue could be?

I find that happens to me if the cable is twisted.
