It's the age of bluetooth headsets now, cut the cords!
this was the same mindset apple used when not using blu-ray and going straight with streaming/cloud. Not sure why they didn't just embrace BT

Why don't we see what the actual product will before before poo-pooing the idea?
consider it poo-pood

The answer is you don't need to have the product "in hand". It's a bad decision in and of itself; the jack isn't going to be there when the 7 arrives. It's going to *not* be there when you get it. That is the point... you don't have to wait for something to ship if you know it isn't there.... right?

I don't get what you're saying. The AirPods ARE bluetooth, with a layer on top to make pairing seamless with iOS devices. If you pair it with another device guess what they are? BLUETOOTH EARBUDS!

I guess I am disappointed as those headphone are Apple only (not compatible with others) and the battery life is quite bad (5hrs?)

Bad compared to what?

The samsung earbuds last like only 1 hour in between recharges.
Bad as in headphones should have a longer life than 5hrs imo to be useful. They need to have the battery life of a remote control/calculator/ etc for me to not be concerned about continually keeping them charged. These won't even get through a work day.

I have wireless headphones that have a 17hr batt life and I find that I forget about charging those as it is

Are you going to be wearing those headphones continuously throughout the day? If not, that's what the charging case is for. Place the airpods into the case when you aren't using them and they will be charged by the next time you do want to use them.

As for your wireless headphones, are they are miniaturised as the airpods? I feel that 5 hours is already a very respectable duration for a product as small as the airpods.

BT when I use them is for generally longer than 5 hours. My current NT headsets have better than that. True usable hours will likely be less.
Besides, those are seriously ugly. Danglies are not in my future. Did I mention they were ugly?
These look more like a JI Fashionista statement than anything truly usable. ;)

That I have to agree. The look of the airpods don't really make for a great first impression, and that picture of Cnet's Scott with the airbuds dangling out like stray cigarette butts likely just undid all that millions of promotional advertising Apple has spent on.

They would have worked better in black, like the original BT headset for the original iPhone.

Apple states that they think the future of audio is wireless. They then proceed to put corded lightning headphones in the box and a corded adapter. Also, teardowns show there was plenty of room for the headphone jack.

While I agree with you on the one hand, I disagree on the other. The iPhone was designed for the smallest enclosure. There is no room in the 4.7" iPhone for a headphone jack. There might be room in the 7 Plus, but only with some re-engineering. So all things considered, retaining the headphone jack in the 7 Plus only causes fragmentation and confusion. Not to mention, Apple knows what its plans are for the next iPhone, which may make retaining the headphone jack even the Plus model impossible. So, no. The headphone jack had to go.

But putting a pair of wired headphones in the box, which can't be used on anything else except the most recent iOS devices, including the Mac, was just dumb. At least if they were taking the Lightning route, they could have introduced a pair of high-end Lightning equipped Beats, or to keep with their narrative, a W1 chip BT dongle to clip on the end of a pair of 3.5mm headphones.

And this is going to get nasty if it's discovered that Apple has changed the MFi specs and now allows analogue audio output through Lightning, and all the $9 adapter is doing is changing the shape of the port connector.

Just for grins I went today and picked up a lightning to 3.5mm adapter. It is incredibly small.

Yes it is ... now TEAR THAT CUCKER DOWN and let us know what's inside it!!

Finally!!!

a couple people have finally hacked into them. Looks like a DAC. Well, it must technically be a stereo dac, stereo amp and a mono-adc in that chip. The IC on the reverse side is the standard one that all lightning cables have, i guess.

I think that they sound identical. Only difference being that the Lightning jack wiggles more easily.
