Lightning to Thunderbolt possibility

Is this something that is a possibility of Apple releasing? I know you don't need the speed, but I'd love to free up a USB port that I typically have my iPhone cable plugged into.

Is it cost prohibitive? Is it capable of charging?

This would be a good idea, the speed would be welcome though if you had lots to sync on say, a 64gb model. I keep thinking is lightning future ready, i.e can they update it to usb 3 and thunderbolt in the future?
