Good job with troubleshooting, OP. It sounds to me like your display calibration software may be causing conflicts with Adobe. I doubt Adobe support will be able to help you with that. I would suggest disabling your display calibration or temporarily uninstalling the display calibration software.

A further update - I added a second user and tested LR with a few photos. Again, it did not dim the monitor. So there’s something with the original catalog or preferences for my user settings. Not at all sure how to find out what it might be though. Does Adobe have some sort of preference file/log that can be safely deleted and will be recreated when you start the program again? Whatever it is affects both LR and PS-CameraRaw (though I didn’t try PS with the second user).
Hello, I use LrC every day and I also have a MB Pro but never experienced something like this. Definitely try to manually reset Lr’s preferences. Follow Method #2 of this guide:

Unlikely. The guys that test and use it are extensive LR users.

More likely an issue with your migration.
Try installing the Calibration software on the test user you created, run a profile and see if the problem is there.

If not it’s a problem with your migration. If the test above doesn’t work try a clean install.

I’ve been playing around with it today. I first noticed the issue when I migrated to the M2, turned off the graphics processor and it went away - forgot about the issue.

However, I had noticed something when I started up both the M2 and now the M4 that I wondered about - I get a quick notification on the screen as the computer is starting up that says something about increasing contrast.

I have no idea where that came from, it appears and then disappears quickly. It does NOT appear when I switch to the second user. I first noticed it when I was setting up the M2Max computer and while I found the additional contrast annoying, it wasn’t enough to bother me. At the time I had an X-Rite i1Pro calibrator and it’s i1Profiler software. At the time the calibrator didn’t work on the M2Max computers and I never tried to use it later on - I ended up buying the Calibrite.

This morning I deleted all the i1Profiler stuff (since I don’t need it), but it didn’t make a difference.

It’s definitely an issue with your import then. I did speak to the Calibrite team, but they’ve not come across it before.

I would go for the clean install. I did it myself a while back. It’s a good opportunity to get rid of some of the stuff you don’t need.

Thanks for asking. I did verify that it’s not the Calibrite software, I added it to the second user I set up and went through the calibration - it didn’t dim the monitor when I went back to the develop mode.

This might be a red herring, but I also played around in the system settings with the display settings. I hadn’t paid any attention to the preset block, only brightness and such things. The display is set for Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits). I switched it to Photography (P3-D65) and went back into LRC - the Develop mode did NOT dim the monitor like it does with the Apple XDR Display pre-set. This might be another red herring.

I’ll try deleting LR preferences first, before I go through a clean install. I’ll need to do more research about how to do it before attempting it. But it wouldn’t be such a bad idea because I noticed that CS6 has migrated along with other stuff that I don’t even remember what it is. I’ll need to figure that all out too, before attempting it. And my internet has been slower than usual recently.

So my first Mac was in 2012. I had so much crap on the thing. Then I did what you did and migrated to my new Mac.

After some issues with that I had to do a clean install earlier this year (it’s a 2018 Mac Mini). Freed up a lot of space.

Regarding the profiles, shouldn’t you be leaving it on the one you have created using the calibration device?
The XDR profile you selected is for HDR monitors and (I believe) uses local dimming. So perhaps it’s darkening your images because it’s trying to do something to maintain the HDR settings? If it’s not dark enough, it can’t show the brighter image parts with enough contrast between the light and the dark.
Select the profile you created and you should be fine. Forget about using the native one for photography. D65 is correct.

OK, deleting the LR preferences didn’t make a difference. So I’m thinking that I’ll need to do a clean install. Is there any sort of guide somewhere how to do it? I’m guessing I’ll deauthorize computers through Adobe and maybe have to do something similar with other software? I am really dreading this!

I thought you said if you didn’t select the XDR profile it didn’t have the issue? If that’s correct you shouldn’t need to do anything.

If you do need to do a clean install, basically you are wiping your Mac and then installing your stuff manually. So the key is to make sure you have multiple back ups and test the data held on them before you do anything.

Then it’s a slow process. Choosing what you need. Seeing what are basically duplicate files etc.

To close this out - I spent the day working on the computer - I returned it to the original factory install, then set it up as a new computer. Downloaded software - I had many of the installers saved from when I had updated things, but decided to download everything again. I started with Adobe and checked LRC every time I added something else. The monitor dimming didn’t happen again, so whatever the conflict was, it’s gone now. The only thing I didn’t think about was the fact that I had a folder on the computer in Mail that had all my software licenses. Luckily the one I couldn’t locate on the manufacturer’s website had the option to email the activation code to you - problem solved. I haven’t yet tried to deal with Photomatix yet - I rarely use it any more, but it can be helpful when LR or PS won’t merge exposure bracketed sets properly. I’ll tackle that tomorrow.

So it solved my problem and went smoother than it could have. The only thing I can’t figure out is that I used to have a symbol for the internal HD on the desktop. That disappeared and I can’t figure out the right way to phrase a search request to figure out how to get it back.

Thank you all for your help! It was huge in getting me to solve the problem.

Glad it worked out!

The HD on the desktop is a Finder setting that is no longer enabled by default.

Awesome!!! Thank you SO much - I’m delighted to find that. I’m finding that as time goes by, things get more complicated with new menus etc. and I don’t always find them. I had never noticed this before.
