Standby Mode is a nice gimmick which caters to a need that should have been provided years ago.
Last night we were staying at a hotel, first time since the iOS 17 upgrade.
When I woke it was light my iPhone (on charger and in landscape position) was black and Standby came on when I touched the screen. A small analogue clock and calendar set to Cupertino time.
The thing is, I've been using Nite Time to display a large, digital, ambient red, time display on this and previous iPhones for years.
My iPhone SE 3 does not have Always On Display, only iPhone 14 onwards has this facility so, even if I could find a bedside clock display that suited me from the myriad of Standby display options it wouldn't stay on. Nite Time on the other hand stays on until closed.
So, yes, it's nice but of no real use to me. Unless you have an iPhone 14 you would need to wake sufficiently to touch the screen in order to see the display, not something I would want to do.

I love it! It’s the beginning stages.. it’ll grow and have APIs for other apps to make good use of it

With the imagination and imagination innovation out there, it’ll become a subset of joy :)

My weird take away at the moment is the font is too large for the range of FaceID on current devices.

It should be smaller. Would fit more text in the widgets and would encourage you to place the phone at a range where the FaceID works rather than at arms length or more.

So....I've been in ongoing contact with Apple support for EXACTLY this issue. I have a 15 Pro on iOS 17.0.3.
Everywhere and everbody stated that if you have a pro model with always on display, the standby mode clock display WILL STAY ON during the night, when the iPhone is on a charger.

But it does not!!!!

All 4 Apple support agents I spoke with at length, claimed that it SHOULD stay on.

#1 said it's probably 'childhood illness' of iOS17. Then I dropped out of the call.
#2 said it's the optimized charging mode I had on. Tested - it's not!
#3 said it's the ESR charger stand that was not supported by Apple. I should buy an Apple charger. I told him Apple doesn't have a magsafe charger to make the iPhone stand upright. He had me perform a few more pointless exercises etc., and then said "only the 3rd party chargers that can be purchased in the Apple store were certified by Apple and will make sure everything works as it should"

My iPhone got remotely analyzed several times and is supposedly 100% healthy.
My settings were checked via remote sessions and were declared 100% correct.

So I PURCHASED a Belkin magsafe charger from the Apple Store.

Tested with original Apple 20W charger: screen turns black after ~30 seconds. Same as before.
Tested with original Apple 90W charger: screen turns black after ~30 seconds. Same as before.

So it's a proven fact now, that this is either a bug, or it works as designed (the screen stays white and on during daytime, in bright light) - but if so, all the documentation is wrong, and all the Apple support people don't know the facts, because ALL of them confirmed that the screen should stay on.

Finally, I found a support agent #4 today, who understood there is something wrong, and who will discuss this in a call with an Apple engineer later on today, and promised to update me afterwards.

I will report back here on the outcome. To be continued....

P.S. sorry after re-reading the OP I just found it's not exactly the same issue, as you have an SE.
However, my findings might still be interesting for you & others.

Ever since I updated to iOS 17, I have started using StandBy on a nightly basis. Since I don’t have a traditional clock on my nightstand, it’s nice that if/when I wake up in the middle of the night, I can tell what the time is. It’s also great having the weather (Carrot Weather) widget on Standby so I know what the temperature and conditions are like when I wake up.

Using this on my 14 Pro.

Did you check this setting? Standby - Display - Switch from Automatic to Never.

I bought the Twelve South Hi-Rise 3 Deluxe just for this purpose.. to use StandBy

Works great, highly recommended charger .. and StandBy has been fine for me

of course. I had it right from the start, and it got re-checked by all Apple guys 100 times. Even with remote support sessions.
My issue is standby is on all night, then I wake up and the screen turned off at around 6 or 7 am, interestingly enough around the time optimised charging does it’s thing.

is that the same issue you are having?

it has nothing to do with optimised charging. I tested with optimized on/off, and with 80% on/off.
Also, after the first night I thought it turns off much later, during the night, because when I went to bed, it was on, when I woke up, it was off. So optimized charging was suspected first (by myself AND the Apple guy).
However, I then found out it turns off soon, after 30 - 60 seconds with no head or arm movement.
It MAY seem as if it's on anyway, but believe me, it turns itself off if you lie totally motionless.
The motion detection is very sensitive and actually a smart thing. However, if descriptions and Apple people claim that it SHOULD stay on, then I want it to be this way - and there should be a switch to turn motion detection on or off. And not default to motion detection as the only option if everything/everybody claims otherwise.
And during the day, at bright(er) light, it stays on forever, with white digits & letters instead of red. This might als mislead and make somebody think it stays on anyway.
No it doesn't.
