If you can get by with your current computer, I would wait until at least 2017 for Cannonlake which will sort all the mess with the slip ups over the past 2 years. It will introduce a new die shrink and significant performance boost over current generations. Of course, there will be a new microarchitecture the year after, so maybe waiting a bit more until 2018 will provide a well justified upgrade, cheaper DDR4 memory.

Love my Broadwell rMBP 13 inch I bought in November. Won't be needing a new one for a very long while.
Especially a slower one...

Apple doesn't update computers for the sake of "latest specs list". See what they did with the 2015 MacBook Pro 15", still on Haswell because of the idiotic Intel release of Broadwell and Skylake.
We will see new MacBook when Intel will provide better overall performance.

So excited for a completely refreshed (internally and externally) Mac laptop lineup.
This family is in need of two new/up-to-date machines. Come on Apple, we have waited for ages.

13" rMBP will definitely be my next Mac. Running a 15" 2013 rMBP and it's just too heavy. Hoping for a redesigned, lighter form factor for the MacBook Pro's in 2016.

The performance hit between a 15" with quad-core and a 13" with dual-core is huge. It depends on your needs of cource. But I will never buy a dual-core again.

And what if this is the next 13" Macbook Air?!? Lower score of the current MBP but higher than the MBA...

It wouldn't be clocked that high. I don't think the macbook airs can even use the U type cpus.

Just bought two MBAs last week, so of course they will release new ones in a week or two. You can thank me :D

I also bought a HP spectre pro with a skylake chip in it. The broadwell MBA holds up pretty well in comparison. It's let down by the screen a bit which is outdated compared with the HP.

Come on Apple, I have been waiting for this for like a year and a half now.

My unibody 2008 won't last much longer

Not with a 28w CPU.

It should happen, it makes total sense this round. I'd be surprised if you didn't get that request as at least an upgrade option.

No chance of <28w quad core chips. If they make the new 13" thinner as expected then I don't see how it's possible.

Macbook air is dead just accept it.

I heard from insiders at Intel that in 2019 there wil be an upgrade of the updated Cannonlake from 2017. Oh wait i almost forgot to say that in 2020 it will receive another update. it just keeps on going man .. jus't buy it when you need it

"The model identifier SKLCRB1,1 also does not line up with any of Apple's other pre-release identifiers. The reported 6GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM is also suspect in both the amount and speed of the memory."

Currently not many Apple laptops with 6GB RAM, but very standard with many Windoze pc's.

By posting this news to the front page, it seems clear that the MacRumors staff are feeling for us who have been pining away in the MBP forum discussing a possible MBP redesign and the coming of Skylake. (Perhaps the front page post will help force Apple's hand - or the reliable rumor creators - and we'll hear some "real" rumors soon? Maybe?!)

It's gotten so bad that I've even made my first post to MacRumors! I'll go back to my early 2011 15" MBP now and keep waiting, and watching, and waiting...

I won't need it. I could have purchased the 15 inch base model MacBook Pro, but I said to myself, if Apple released a Skylake version, this model, even though powerful with the 16 GB of RAM, would be 2 CPU generations behind by the time Skylake arrives. Considering my primary reason for wanting it would be the screen and the RAM since I use a lot of virtual machines, it would be more than enough. Its just the old factor. For now, I will wait until the new stuff incubates: 5k 15 inch, 32 GB DDR4, Thunderbolt 3, 512 GB or 1 TB SSD standard configs, latest micro-architecture. You can definitely bet if its a redesign which is rumored, theyn its not going to be cheap, it will be 2012 all over again. Again, this is a want case, not a need. My 13 Broadwell is running like a champ.

What are you waiting for exactly? If you purchased the Broadwell based machine last summer it would have been a very worthy update to your 2008 machine.

I heard the Skylakes were coming within 6 months so I thought I might as well wait

Also maybe a redesign will happen

See and I think I'm the opposite way, currently I have the 13" rMBP and feel like I want bigger.... I may regret it though since I do travel alot with it.

That is patience! I'm not sure many can wait that long. I suspect a new form factor in 2016 will be enough to entice many to upgrade to Skylake, even though performance improvement will be minor.

I don't see Apple making a big deal out of Skylake, unless they're planning on skipping Kaby Lake all together. But seeing how Kaby Lake is gearing up to be a iGPU powerhouse, I doubt it.

If Intel ever ships a stable processor I could see Apple making a big deal. The MBPs in general have been waiting for a long time for a decent upgrade processor. The problem is when will Intek actually ship a decent SkyLake mobile chip without the show stopping bugs.

I want to get a rMBP 13" so freaking badly but I need to wait a couple years. I'm a youngin'; sophomore in high school. In my opinion, it would be idiotic to get a laptop two years before college, and then have to use it for another presumably 4 years where it actually matters. 6 year old laptop, no matter what company it's from, is not going to be the greatest.
While true in the past, a laptop will last far longer these days than they did in the past. The trick is to have enough RAM in the unit. For somebody looking ahead having a paid for laptop for college certainly beats buying a new one at the start. The reality is there are plenty of distractions in college for every penny you will have. Most of those distractions have two legs. Then there is vacations and other travel, ball games and other social events, basically and endless sink for your hard earned dollars.

Beyond all of that the computer you get may or may not be the center of your school work. Some course work may have you at the keyboard constantly while others may just require word processing. After all computers can't do basket weaving!

My unibody 2008 won't last much longer

My early 2008 MBP died last year so I had no choice. I down sized to a 13" MBP and have been mostly pleased with it. The 13" screen does take some getting use too and sometimes it is just too small.

The big negatives for me with the 13":
1. Sound volume is an issue this via the internal speakers or via the line out connector (headphone). Interestingly HDMI out sound is at full volume.
2. Battery life isn't all that great if you work the machine hard. Run a very large C++ rebuild using other apps concurrently and you can watch the battery discharge minute by minute.
2A. On the other hand battery life is pretty damn good when used lightly. This is the first Mac laptop where I don't shut the machine down, just close the lid and go. Sleeping never worked well on the old 2008. So the battery problem is a wash.
3. Storage space is an issue. I got a 512 GB machine and frankly I really wish Apple would significantly increase the amount of storage on hand. The whole point of a laptop is that the device is portable which means you can't rely upon streaming. On the other hand the SSD is Fast!
4. The machine needs more USB ports. Im not sure if the marketing people at Apple even understands this but I'm certain that the engineers do. Four USB-C ports in future machines should completely take care of this.

This I can personally verify. Broadwell has been very good to me in my 13" MBP bought last year. It delivered a big improvement in performance VS that old machine. Nothing is perfect of course but in general I'm very pleased with this machine.
