No one of course has a crystal ball. But my buying choice for my late 2013 27" was guided by the simple fact that my primary application is Aperture. And the current version (now some 4 years old) doesn't employ the GPU for processing. So, the Nvidia 755m GPU was entirely adequate. And saved me about $200 over the much more powerful 780m chip.

But I wonder if I will have to scrap my computer when the refresh of Aperture comes out requiring a more robust GPU. I would like to insulate myself from technology sticker shock. Any thoughts on the subject?

The likely GPU for the next iMac is the 800M series. The 860M will be a decent jump in performance from your 755M since it is based on Maxwell. The 870M and 880M won't see much of a bump due to them being slightly faster Kepler's.

I find both 780M and 880M a bit disappointing. 780M might be slightly faster than 680MX at default clock speed, but who plays games at default clock speed - that's a huge waste of performance/fps. 780M has both lower overclocking headroom, and throttles down when overclocked AFAIK. Hopefully the Maxwell chip will represent a more impressive boost up from the performance level of 680MX. Unfortunately Maxwell is still a good distance away into the future, being delayed yet again.
